Using the Domino machine with the 32mm hole drilling sled and guide rail

Hi all,

I placed a tutorial on my web site that describes how to mount the Domino machine onto the 32mm shelf hole drilling sled for accurately locating mortises over relatively long distances. The only modification to the sled required is drilling two 5mm holes through the base that in no way hurt the use of the sled for drilling shelf holes.

It seems that with this setup, one could actually use rows of domino holes, and use dominoes themselves to support shelves for a shop cabinet.  It would be quick, and very strong.

Yes, the system is very accurate and you can easily place tight mortises over long distances.  Turned the way I show the dominos are parallel with the guide rail.  I have not tried it, but I think you could just as easily turn it 90 degrees and drill two more holes on centerline if one wanted the dominos perpendicular to the guide rail like for shelf supports and such.

On a related thought, I used the shutter mortise idea a while back to make a badge box for our local Rotary club.  Perched the guide pins over the sides of a work piece and made the max depth mortises.  Indexed them down and repeated for a whole series of diagonal mortises spaced a bit more than the badge width apart.  Then sliced pieces off on the band saw to make dividers with the mortises sideways.  Loaded in dominos sticking through the mortise so they were centered with half sticking out one side and the other half sticking out the other side.  A few rows of these dividers hold the badges upright at an angle so they are easy to see and easy to replace in the badge box.  Makes taking attendance a snap.  Probably a useful thing to keep in mind for other similar uses.

  My time these days in the shop are so much more meaningful than before. The operation made me smell the roses...not what I was smelling for 21 days in bed.  I go today for the one month checkup with surgeon - his interest at this point is to see if you are regaining your pre-op physical ability. I can't wait. I have exceeded it in a number of ways and with continued exercising and weight loss can do more. A nice feeling.

Haven’t done this but thanks for bringing back a thread with two early champions of Festools. John Lucas produced a lot of visual material showing Festools in use (back when few people had heard of the brand) and anything posted by Jerry work is worth reading carefully.
