VAC SYS as a vacuum press?

I recently got the Festool VAC SYS (vacuum clamp). I have heard that it may be possible to use it as a vacuum press. Does anyone have any information about this modification?

Do a search on FOG. I remember that there was a recent thread on this very subject.

As I recall, the consensus was that it would be too hard on the vacuum unit...having the motor run constantly for the period of time required for pressing....but I could be wrong.
I don't intend to use mine for anything other than for what it was designed. Too expensive a unit, and if it breaks, it has to go to Germany for repair.

When you are veneering the typical process involves preparing the piece, inserting the piece in the veneer bag, attaching the vacuum pump and then running the pump until enough vacuum is created. Once full vacuum is achieved unless there is a major leak in the system the pump may not have to run again for several minutes or longer and then only for a short time to restore full vacuum. I would think that the VacSys pump could handle this load the only question I have is the unit designed for continuous run or does it have an auto shutoff when it comes up to full vacuum.

The unit doesn't have a turn off because it was designed for clamping and with that operation usually the pieces will be clamped and unclamped fairly often.

Thanx Peter, then if someone wanted to use for veneering they would have to build a pressure sensitive power switch that the VacSys could be plugged into. The main power to the unit could then be turned on and off automatically which would not interfere with the warranty.

I've run mine for hours on end (all day) many times and it's still going strong.    I don't think it hurts it to run continuously.

I seem to remember back when the vac Sys first was introduced someone from Festool said it could be used for vacuum bagging.
