My last big project involved using some "rustic wood" probably was meant more for pallets than cabinets.  I noticed that during sanding i was getting dust in the vacuum cup.    Could this be harmful to the vac pump?  I tried very hard to make sure that the cups were placed in areas where there was less or very small defects.    I looked in the manual shortly but i did not see anything.  Now that the project is finished i just thought i would ask the groups opinion on this.

Obviously anything in the pump is not good. Hopefully it does not hurt the pump.

Next time, masking tape on the back of the board. Tape sticks to the board, cup seals to the tape. Should keep the problem from reoccurring.

We’ve had some MDF that needed the tape barrier, it was really porous.

yes, I will do that in the future.  I have to say this is one of my favorite tools and do not want to abuse it.

Thanks dukebird for bringing these up. I was more concerned about random dust falling on the cups while not in used. I guess I’ll cover mine when I’m not using them.

Put a cheap automotive fuel filter into the vacuum connection? Should stop all dust being introduced to the vacuum system from entering the pump, while not choking airflow (unless loaded with dust).

I’m pretty sure there is a filter prior to the vacuum pump for just that reason.
