Wondering why Festool does not bring back the VAC SYS.    Seems to be demand especially since these are going on eBay for $3000-$4000!

I’m sure there are multiple dynamics to consider.

Meaningless. During the first Covid lockdown in the UK when all the manufacturing plants were shut down, 25-kilo bags of gypsum plaster (normally sold for retail price of £7) were selling on eBay for £45-50 a bag. Make something unavailable = the market price will skyrocket. There are guys out there who'll pay $25k for a single Pokemon card.

[member=79051]UrbanJungleman[/member] , Welcome to posting on the FOG!

Well, let's go into the history of the Vac-Sys here in North America.  In the Fall of 2009 I was with a group of about 19 FOG members at the Indianapolis Headquarters where we were shown the Vac Sys which was coming to North America.  We were asked our opinions about it.

Then it didn't come.  And didn't come. And didn't come.  Then it was revealed that the model for the rest of the world would not pass the necessary certifications including (but maybe not limited to) being in a systainer.  Then a new model - just for North America had to be designed and go thru the certification process.  And the pump was not in a systainer.  By then Festool had long moved past the original systainers and was in the T-Loc mode.  But the Vac-Sys stuff came in the original systainers.  Why?  My guess is that they ordered a whole LOT of those for the earlier rollout that didn't happen.  Somewhere around this time the parent company of Festool and Tacos acquired Schneider which was involved with pneumatics and air compressors.  Again a guess on my end, but whereas a compressor and a vacuum pump are closely related inversely, perhaps Schneider manufactured the pumps for Festool.  What is not a guess is that Schneider is no longer a sister company to Tanos, Festool, Shaper, Sawstop, and Festo.  Maybe their source of pumps is no longer accessible.

Then we have the sales of the Vac Sys while it was available.  Only Festool knows for sure and they are very MUM on discussions about sales and marketing (rightly so for a private company in a highly competitive market in my mind), but I'll take a stab at saying that sales did not materialize the way that they hoped as demonstrated again with the non-T-loc Systainers right to the end.  I suspect that others, like myself, considered it a niche tool and possibly didn't see the need in their workflow.  Why?  I never saw a brick and mortar that had one on hand.  Even if they did, based on the dealers I have visited, their employees would have been hard pressed time wise or even knowledge wise to properly demonstrate the advantages of the system.  The system is great for clamping but it really shines in a rinse and repeat clamping workflow.  Demonstrating that takes time and in retail, with limited employees trained, that can be tough.  I suspect that others, like myself, falsely thought that one day they might purchase it.

And then, as often happens, we learned of the discontinuation and then many - including myself - scampered to get one.  I got one on my third try and wasn't able to get the complete set.  Some more sporadically popped up at dealers when left over stock was found in distribution overseas - but remember that the North American market was a one off of the pump itself.

So now there are some still looking for one and they are willing to pay large amounts for them.  I read about a complete set with the two clamping heads going for right at $5K in a matter of less than an hour.  And there were multiple inquiries and people willing to pay that.

Although there is a demand, again not speaking for Festool here, I doubt there will be a return.  Too little too late.

Offered Respectfully,

Peter Halle

Interesting history! Your hypothesis about Schneider sounds very plausible. If someone can get the head unit and foot pedal, it seems like there's enough posted knowledge here to use a third-party pump and get the benefits. Even the foot pedal can likely be third-party.

Glad I got the system when I did (not on inflated secondary pricing) and nice to know if I decide to sell it, it could net a lot more than I paid.

As much as I'd prefer the accessory kit to be in T-Loc, it isn't worth the hassle to buy a T-Loc and move the foam to it. Besides, my shop is way more heavy on Classic  :'(

I remember the meeting, first time I met Peter.

Once the announcement was made the VAC SYS was available for order I ordered the complete system through Tom at Tool Home. My system arrived to me a week before the initial ship date. Tom told me not to post its arrival until the official date. I sure do miss Tom.

Very happy with my decision to purchase the system to this day.

When I bought mine in early 2021, my Festool dealer had two of the VAC SYS SE1 kits in stock, but had to order the SE2.  When we cleaned out the warehouse after the business closed its doors last year, we found another SE1 kit and two SE2 kits buried under a bunch of stuff on one of the top shelves.

These still pop up from time to time on the German eBay Kleinanzeigen website.  I have no connection to this, but there is a VAC SYS SE1 for sale now in Mannheim for €1,199:

The inflated prices aren't terrible. I've become somewhat of a hand tool person and in that world it is not uncommon to see a discontinued 300 dollar tool go for 1200 all day long.

I love my vac sys setup dearly. If I may be so bold, I have the nicest setup in existence. Both units are quick detachable using OEM hardware and the cart is the nicest I've come across.

But if someone were to offer me crazy money for it I might have to think about it.

Matt

Not sure how to interpret that.

No interpretation needed Richard...that was a Divine Intervention moment when the current article to be sold moves over to the Estate Sale category.  [poke]

Some things are just meant to be...fly fishing flies...vises...now Vac Sys, who knows what tomorrow will bring...maybe Mitee Grip [smile]

I was going to ask about it since I'm in NJ but don't think i need it

I'm a hobbyist and put off buying the VAC SYS for a long time because I thought it was a production tool and I didn't need it.  The first time I used it during a cabinet project, I realized it was a great addition to my workflow and wished I had bought it earlier.

What surprised me was, given the eBay prices, no one reached out. Not sure how to interpret that.

Remember, classifieds are only visible to registered members.

I saw the ad, thought about it, but I agree the eBay prices put me off and I didn't want to be rude and offer anything less.  I don't need it NOW badly, and can cobble together something a tad less than MSRP also factors into it.

same, saw the add, got excited - saw no price - was like "Oh crap" if you have to ask....

then I moved on to the next thread

I didn’t think it was good for my uses until I used one. It was unavailable by then but I have everything but the pump. The prices are high and I keep watching for one but am going to try putting a pump together myself. I looked into ordering the parts but they aren’t all available

Within the last few years a full set came up on Recon.  Because of [member=75283]4nthony[/member] 's slackbot, a lot of people knew it was coming and more than a few people missed out on it and posted about their disappointment at the time. To my knowledge, most found an alternative because they knew that they still needed something, and they come up too infrequently on Recon to wait if you need it.

Recon is also one of the few ways (other than finding one collecting dust in a retailer's warehouse) to snag one at anything resembling a reasonable price with any sort of warranty any more.

Fair points all and I do appreciate the turn off of posting the inflated prices. Kinda "if you are willing to overpay gimme a shout". Bad form on my part, lesson learned and thank you.

[member=44099]Cheese[/member] FWIW yapping about the fly reel recently got me off my butt and I found a really great guy in Austin who consigns and brokers classic tackle. He had a buyer in his pocket for the Leonard Duracane rod (at a fair price...) so it's heading to TX Monday, and he's going to handle the Robichaud reel and Best vise as well.

I may someday use the Vac Sys hence my hesitation letting it go, but any chance I'll fish with those classics is long gone and it's silly for them not to go where they'll be appreciated.

Thanks for the gentle lesson.

Same.

The VAC SYS is in a tool category that I previously didn't understand why it existed or how useful it could be. Work holding, right? I've got dog holes, clamps, and various other means for that. It wasn't until I saw videos of others using it that its usefulness clicked. It's also a great companion to the Domino. And maybe that's why there's demand for it after it has been discontinued? People are seeing others use them and realizing it could also work well for them.

I ultimately went with an alternative thanks to a couple FOG posts from [member=66038]Ebuwan[/member] and have been happy with my decision.
