I received my Veritas Micro Adjust marking gauge and had a chance to try it out today.

The two features I especially like are the larger face (than prior Veritas products) and the way the micro adjust works.

The face is shaped like an almost flat tire, larger at the bottom than at the top. This shape makes excellent contact with the work surface.

The micro adjust is done by loosening a knob at the back end of the gauge and turning a knurled knob to move the marking wheel in and out. Once set, the knurled knob is tightened to secure the position.

The tool has a pleasing heft and feels good in the hand.

That marking gauge is a pure joy to use (like most Veritas products).  I really like the solid feel and balance yet it isn't too heavy.  I've had one for years and it stays sharp for a long time.  Enjoy it.

Did you get the graduated model or the unmarked shaft?

Yes, the face on the new marking gauge is larger than on the older models and is widest at the bottom of the face.

I like this one!  I’ve got the one with the centered rod in the round base, my only gripe is i want more surface area on themarking gauge.  I have a tendency to tip it over the edge.

I also find the new version to be an improvement over the older one... having 2 comes in handy as well.

I’m a long long term power tool woodworker just getting into hand tools. I’ve been buying a lot of stuff and determining what works and what doesn’t. The new style Veritas marking guide really works well.

In the works well category:

Bad Ax saws
LN planes, chisels, honing guide, water stones
Blue Spruce chisels
Knew coping saw
Barron dove tail magnetic guide
Veritas micro adjust marking guide
Moxon vise

I find watching videos has accelerated my learning process greatly as has this forum.

Yes, this is indeed a super handy well build tool.
Just don't drop it or the marking wheel shatters easilt, this has happend to me unfortunatley.
It's an easy fix and the tool is well build so no harm to the tool it's self.
Just ordering a small part like this feels stupid

Been there, done that.

The new marking gauge (or the anniversary gauge:http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=69871&cat=1,42936,69871) has a different design that prevents the gauge from rolling.

For my old gauge, I changed the knob, and it no longer rolls off the bench (image).

Hmmm ...we're just about to start celebrating the completion of our 40th year.....just sayin'..... [wink]

They say you can never have enough clamps; for me, I can never have enough wheel marking gauges. I would be more than happy to add the fourth (or 40th anniversary?!) wheel gauge to my collection. [big grin]

More give away?  [tongue]

Q: Can you use two of those micro rods

on the dual gauge

Hi Mario -

You could use one - but not two. Rods are too close together, and will not bypass each other...

Thanks Rob  [smile]

By the way, thanks for your new pet policy... I bring my dog to the store each time I go on a weekend. He loves the threats! [censored]

I’ve always been happy using my Glen Drake Tite-Mark gauges.

But, this Veritas Marking Gauge might tempt me to add another.
