VS600 to be discontinued ?

I have been looking into going over to a 1400EQ having most of my experience with the Porter Cable 690. This afternoon I almost pulled the trigger but hesitated after hearing that the VS600 joining system was being discontinued. One of my main reasons for going this route was the versatility of this system. Has anyone else heard about this system being discontinued? Can I assume that it will be replaced by something even better?

Any Insight or advice would be appreciated!

John

I haven't heard of it being discontinued. I'm pretty certain it's not their biggest seller by any stretch of the imagination - but it would be very "un-Festool" to take such a specific woodworking capability as dovetail joints out of their offering. So I'd more expect it to be upgraded rather that discontinued.

Regardless - if VS600 is your target ... I'd be looking OF 1010. I have an OF 1400 now, if I get a VS600 in the future (it is currently my plan to do so), I'll get the lighter OF 1010 to use with it.

Shane, you out there? This sound like a job for "Ask Festool".

It has already been discontinued in North America. To my knowledge there are NO intentions to do so in other markets.

We have every intention of continuing to support it with accessories and bits.

For clarity, this thread now consists of two merged threads regarding the availability of the VS-600 in NA.

Looks like sales were slow in the USA. This is one of the "hidden jewel" tool.  Very efficient and fast for small batches of drawers. It's much better than Porter's Cable jig.
There are some limitations, but overall it's marvelous. Setup is extremely fast. If you see it on the second hand market don't hesitate, and grab it. Festool USA will sell router bits, templates, bushings and spare parts at least for seven years.

If its on your short list, that's good news for you. It means you can score one at a better price and have our commitment of continued support.

Shane,

If I am reading you correctly, if I can get my hands on the VS600 Festool will still have all of the template guides and such readily available? Is there any possibility that a Festool dealer might have a 600 hanging around? Can this be ordered from a European dealer where it is still available?

Sorry about all of the questions but my purchase of the 1400 really revolved around this unit.

To answer a earlier comment from Kevin, I am choosing the 1400 over the 1010 (which I agree would be a better router for the 600) because I already own quit a few half-inch router bits and the 1010 does not accept a half-inch collet.

Thanks Shane- I really appreciate the insight you provide to this forum.

I do not think it's better than INCRA. especially with my new improvement ..

John,

I can say that we plan to continue to make bits, templates, etc. available for the VS 600. Since there are not plans, to my knowledge, to discontinue this globally, Festool Germany will continue to product these for quite some time to come. I would suggest you talk to your preferred Festool dealer(s) about whether they have it in stock or not. I don't have access to their inventory levels. If you inquire about it and still can't find one, send me a PM or email and I'll see if I can help you locate one.

And, I really enjoy being able to connect with you guys here on the forum.

Shane

PS - Apologies for the rather short response yesterday. I was down at the Super Bowl Village with the family. [wink]

I have the two box joint templates and the bits remaining in stock.

I am interested in getting the VS 600 but here it has been discontinued in the U.S.  Two days ago I placed an online order for one through Tool Barn.  After ordering, I read more about it when I discovered the posts about it being discontinued.  I called Tool Barn and the customer service rep seemed to think they would get one to me in two weeks but they did not have one in stock.  Is festool still supplying these to dealers to get rid of what they already have in stock?  Do you think I'm going to get one, or should I look for a different jig?

Thanks,

John

My best look says that Festool is out of the main machine. I have the box joint templates in stock.

The VS 600 is out of stock on our end. The last one went out the door on or around the end of June 2011.

The reason it was on my short list and not in my hand is budget. The 5K I have spent this last year on Festools kinda has me taped for awhile. It is a little frustrating to come up with a purchase plan to have it pulled out from under you. I will just have look at other brands or a used one when my budget recovers next fall.

I think you need a trip to Europe or Australia with a long case  [big grin]

For whatever reason, the North American business is trading volume for range ... but when you consider the number of locations that would need to carry stock ... 200 VS 600's on show to sell maybe 50 a year ... would be economical suicide (I'm just guessing the numbers).

Things are much dearer down under - but part of the cost is probably our range.

I know I can have a VS 600 tomorrow if I want ... same with anything CMS, Precisio, Protool, etc. But I can't have it at US prices.

I also have the choice of comprehensive showrooms 5 mins, 30 mins and multiple stores 60 mins away - and they all have the ability to demonstrate the gear. This is probably what you trade for low prices (Remember Australia is a big place too, bust we only have about 8% of the US population).

Yes - I'd lover lower prices here, but I'm not certain I'm willing to lose everything I enjoy to get it.  [smile]
