Wall-hugging shelf for my phone and IPad

I added a breakfast bar to the sunroom the other day and since it is the pass-through area from the garage, it became the logical place to recharge my IPhone and IPad.

I didn’t want to eat up any table so I added a wall-hugging shelf for the electronics.

The shelves themselves are made from 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” pine.  They are mounted on a piece of 1/4” thick birch plywood using glue only.  The power strip is mounted under the counter.

I had only space for 6-1/2” width, but that seems fine.

I applied four coats of wipe on poly + one coat of butchers’ wax applied with 0000 steel wool.

A small project finished on one evening, but I like it.  It suits the pared down Scandinavian modern look I am going for.

The power supply is mounted underneath the counter.  Unfortunately the wires are visible  as are the chargers.

I originally planned on using a “conference table pass through” outlet.  These come pre-wired with a cord and a plug.  I only had to drill the hole and install it.  A tidy installation and fairly economical (I found them on Amazon.com for $30.00 to $50.00).

But I did not read all the specs carefully.  The most powerful charger listed 18 amps split between three outlets.  It would work, but I am used to the 20 amp versions I am currently using.  They would charge at least 3 times faster.  I might still make that change.  It depends how annoyed the visible chargers make me.

If I were starting over, I would have used 3-1/2” stock to wrap the counter.  That would have hidden the chargers.

Thanks.  It has worked out well.

If you ever decide to do something similar, first mount the chargers and attach the cables.  I did not do that.  The uppermost “shelf” is at the very limit of the cable I have.  If I had mounted the assembly a half inch higher, it would not have reached.

Of course longer cables are available, but I had never even checked before mounting the shelf unit.  I should have been smarter than that.

I was not planning to use the Apple cubes for charging.  As I noted above, I planned on using the unit that goes through a 2-1/2” hole in the work surface of the breakfast bar.  But the 12 amp charger (devised three ways is only 4 amps) would take forever to charge.

Charging time is relevant as Apple now advises not to charge overnight.  I though the reason would have been battery life, but I read recently, it is out of concern for fires.

The genuine Apple cubes are safe, but many people use other makes.  I am using Apple chargers, but I am still not charging overnight or when I leave the house.

Hey guys, don’t trash too many brain cells on New Year’s Eve, but do have a happy and healthy one.
