Ron, no kidding. That would be a heavy base!! 
 
That is one fine job and i like the bow ties.  At first, i liked the steel frame base, but I kept looking at it.  I am not so sure I would have gone with the 1/4" with such a heavy slab on top.  I wonder if some scales of Walnut bolted on might make it more stable and keep the same effect.  I like the idea tho.

I added the vertical rods to add stablity. It worked out great. I'm not a huge fan of it but it works and I could stop spending money on it!!
