Warranty on 2nd hand new tool

Someone locally is selling a Domino that has never been out of the box.  Don't know how he happened to have it; will ask before I buy it.

Would there be any warranty on this if I bought it?  Couple years ago I bought a used Bosch router; they honored the warranty since they could tell from the serial number that it was in the warranty period.  Since you just brought the tool out, it pretty much has to be in the warranty period...

This is one weird policy with Festools, the warranty goes to the original owner and does not follow the tool. Unless they will make an exception for you, there will be no warranty for the second hand (even unused) tool.

Toller,

Thanks for the question. We are actually looking into changing our current policy of the nontransferable warranty. Once we have the final question, we will post it here.

Might be worth checking to see if the warranty has been registered. If it's fairly new & unused, chances are it's not been registered, hence you can buy it, register it in your name, and get the full 3 years.

I got an ex-demo CTL Mini from a Festool dealer here in the UK - it was around 5-6 months old, had been used in their shop, but had never been registered. So I filled in the form & got the full warranty!!!

Funny that Festool won't (currently) transfer the warranty - is this a US-only policy? I've never come across this situation in the UK yet, so wondered if it's presently the same here?

If you do change the policy, I would be grateful if you could email the info; I don't get here often.
That might change if I buy the saw and the dust extractor though.

I hope Festool will change this policy.  In the US market, a warranty is usually associated with the specific product, not the owner.

Also its good marketing.  Personally, one of the key considerations I have when I buy a tool is whether I can sell it for a good price later.  I often buy a tool and then upgrade a year or two down the road.  If I can sell the old tool for a good price, I'm happy.  For instance, I sold my Leigh FMT jig for 80% of what I paid for it five years ago - made the Domino purchase much less painful :D

Making the warranty transferable would increase the resale value and increase my motivation for buying the latest and greatest from Festool!

Having purchased my first Festool tool. Do I have to register it with Festool for warrenty service?

Most of the time, the dealer will take care of that for you.  Definitely true if you order from Bob M or Festool directly.  If you buy at a local store like Woodcraft, I'd send in the card.

Hello all!
This my first post/reply! Hope it works!
What warranty card are you guys talking about? All I have is a green card that says to keep for your records.
A slight case of panic has set in because I have a load of Festool and none of them came with any mention of registering for warranty! Everything came from Woodcraft Supply in NH and I trust those guys to treat me right; they have so far and all is well.
Someone mentioned the value of an open house in another post and for what it's worth you can't do better short of a quick trip to the factory.
Love the tools!

The below information question came from the Festool USA web site.

Question :
I recently purchased a tool and was wondering what I need to do to register it for warranty purposes?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Answer :
There is no need to register your tool; that is done automatically for you at purchase. We are able to track the serial number directly from our warehouse. The card you receive with your tool is for your records.
