I am building a couple of floating shelves in which I would prefer the weather look/ Restoration Hardware weathered gray.  I have read the recipe on the internet of using vinegar and steel wool to oxidize the wood.  Any opinions on this method versus www.weatherwoodstains.com ?

Thanks, Storm

What species of wood are you dealing with,  different woods react differently to different chemicals,  ie: oak tannen and ammonia/ steel wool to ebonize the wood.

I would be open to any wood which I would produce a consistent (not blotchy) gray finish.  Weather wood stains website shows a VG Fir which I like.  I think at this point I am going to try them out.

Look into using Rift White Oak.

You can use the vinegar/steel wool mixture or get some black and white dye or stain and create the gray tone that suits your needs.

I normally wouldn't say this but...

Head to Home Depot. The other day I saw that they now carry "barn wood". Looked decent and was absolutely grey.

Cheers. Bryan.

All the crap furniture Restoration Hardware sells is sprayed with very low grade stains and finishes. The gray finish they use is more of a gray tinted white wash. The site you have linked to could be a good start for you. As others have stated, start with a wood with a high tannin content, like the oaks and you can get homemade treatments to work. Finish with a matte clear.
