We've got some BIG news...

I didn't know they were introducing something new. I have the Origin and love it.  I can just see more of my money flying out the door...

I have no special insight, but a thought just popped into my head that they may announce the addition of Z-axis carving, which would probably get some fence-sitters to hop down, even after the $300 price increase.

Or they're increasing the price that much to make room in the price point for a less expensive offering.

The idea of "BIG" news still makes it sound like a gantry CNC, self-propelling mechanism a la Goliath, or a much larger MFT-style tape workstation.

New Shaper Gen 2.

In a Sys3.

But that's not the only change, thankfully.

Also explains the price increase.

I have a sneaking suspicion the old model won't see a discount, but maybe be more available on the used market and/or at Shaper Recon.

I was giving thought to buying one when it was "on sale", but given the age I thought it might be replaced soon. It really is crappy when companies just don't admit they are EOL'ing a product.

Considering the upgrades and the additional year warranty, the price increase doesn't seem that out of line.

I'm guessing there will be more used models on the market soon, and the Shaper Recon might start notifying interested parties as those who bought within the last 30 days decide if they want to return or not.

As at least one person said in the chat, "if I had waited until Gen 2 came out, I'd have lost 2 years of using the Gen 1."

There's always going to be a decision point and there's no way to make everyone happy.

It appears that the old price is still the price on the Gen 1 unit, so there's that...

Digital equipment gets improved. While that progress does reduce the value (price wise) of the previous generation it doesn’t mean the older machine is worthless. It will still do what is has done and when the next Origin OS is released Nov. 21 the old machine will learn some new tricks.

Glancing at Beaver tools it seems like the Gen. 1 machine will still be sold with extras at the old price? That is at a discount?

I have had the Gen 1 for a couple of years and considering the upgrades, I'll probably just keep mine. Yeah, the auto-pass feature is cool and would save some time but as a hobbyist, I'm not turning out production pieces where time is money. The bigger screen would be nice but not worth taking the huge hit on resale of my current one and paying the increased cost of the new one. I wonder if the current model will get a new software release?

I was referencing those who burned into buying the old by the sale price.

All the software upgrades are backwards compatible. Depth encoding is part of the next firmware update.

Autopass itself does cost $200. My hunch is I'll pay for it out of frustration midway in some project with lots of cuts.

My read is the hardware improvements are evolutionary, the tool sees better and may be smoother but overall functionality is basically unchanged.

for $200, I can live with that.

Is there a Shaper Recon site like there is for Festool?

That's what I got from the Session overview that I just watched. They said the new firmware update (Jenner) will be released in November. That's the free version, available to everyone.
The Auto-pass is an added charge option. They didn't mention price at all, or if it was a "one time" thing, rather than subscription?
It looks as though they are finally making the Z axis functional during the cut. Fantastic improvement, I'll be on it right away.

Never looked at shaper in detail but I'm seeing they are a good source of made in Germany 8mm shank router bits. They can be used in the 1010 with no issues?

Sure. I'm going to get a couple of those new ones myself. That long-reach 8mm seems right.
