I'm building a sailor's chest (per Glen Huey in Popular Woodworking) and instead of using new poplar with paint, the client wants barn wood (of which I have plenty). I'm about half done but thinking about how to finish it. It's for a 5 year old boy, so it'll get beat up - altho the distressed barn wood will hide most of that. There's a warm, aged look (patina?) on the planed/sanded wood so it looks good as is. And I don't want something shiny (even low sheen poly seems not to fit in my mind). So here's the question - leave it bare, or use some very flat finish? Recommendations, please.
