What should I buy first, DC, Jointer, planer or Drum sander

It is also interesting how similar the Grizzly and Powermatic planers are. other then to paint that look identical in design? Are they both made in the same plant in China?

Congratulations on a fine planer GPowers! Should serve you well for years to come.  Glad you received the mobile base with it. Makes milling long lumber easier.  [big grin]

600 pounds is a light weight.

I can get a 2500 machine off the floor and onto a pallet jack or pipe in about 5 minutes, normally.

With one hand tied behind your back?  ;)

Kidding aside, I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd appreciate learning how you do that.

Regards,

John

Probably the easiest way to do it by yourself is renting an engine hoist.  Make sure the rental shop shows you how to assemble and disassemble it properly and checks the cylinder for holding pressure.  You'll also want the correct hook on the end and the appropriate chain for the lift of the tool.  Don't forget any grade 8 or metric 11.9 hardware to attach the chain to the tool.  If you know someone with engine lifting experience, that wouldn't hurt to have them around or have them do it.  Just go slow!

My tools of choice for that are a floor jack, a Johnson bar, hardwood blocks and a long wrecking bar.  Oh yeah, the pallet jack as well.

I do have a cherry picker (engine hoist) but, I don't use it much.  Takes up a lot of room, it is good for pulling heavy tables off of stuff though.

darcy . if im correct (at least in my country) a cherry picker is a self propelled articulating mechanism with a gantry so that you can get to things way up high. i have used them to get to chimneys to fix them and it would lift up and swing out.
an engine hoist is completely different

Yeah, we call those cherry pickers too. [big grin]  Or man lifts.

Engine hoist and cherry picker get intermixed from where I am from.

Jointer first (with helical head) - Hold your breath - Planer - Dust extraction last.

Started this thread just about 2 years ago. Got the planner about 5 month after that.  I just got a delivery date (2/5/2013) for the dust collector and the jonter. So it has taken a LOT longer (almost 2 years) then I original thought. I was thinking 6 month when I started planning and researching these purchase. But I guess life some time gets in the way.

Still need the drum sander and a new, bigger table saw (need to replace my Rigid table saw), most likely a Saw Stop. But that will be after we redo the kitchen, the wife has waited long enough...

The FedEx truck came by today he dropped off a jointer and a Dust collector. O happy weekend... [smile]

Here it is 14 months after buying the cyclone and I'm just getting to installing the permanent dust collection duct system. Boy are they expensive, more then the cyclone itself. I went with the KB duct system, a cheaper version of the Nordfab quick connect system, but parts are still interchangeable. I decided on the quick connect system so I can change the system as my need and space changes. And maybe I will be able to move it to a dedicated shop some day. The picture is just a half of all the pipe and fitting need for the system.

The system will have six 4" drops, one 4" floor sweep and two future 6" drops (just too much money right now).  Also working an a fun gadget, pneumatic blast gates.  They have a 110 volt solenoid  that is activated when a machine is turned on and the blast gate open automatically. Not really necessary but lots of fun to build.

Still working on getting the spindle sander and drum sander. But first thing is upgrading the Ridgid table saw. Hope to be able to get a Sawstop in the next few weeks.
