What's Cooking

Yummy. Looking good Oliver! I miss tuna pizza...

I really love tuna. Especially in sushi. Sadly I had to go to the hospital after eating it a couple of years ago on new years eve. My brother had brought some sushi with him. Turned out I *suddenly* had become allergic to it. Nowadays I can't even get near it. Strange how your body can do this to you without giving any warning signs before it goes bang.

[member=66485]hdv[/member] That's a real pity and terrible experience to have had, of course. But yeah, the human body can act in mysterious ways.

I love tuna and sushi in general as well. :) We're lucky to have some great places run by Japanese chefs to get sushi from in the next  big(er) city. ;)

[member=66216]GoingMyWay[/member] The tuna they put on pizza is canned tuna. I think way back we have conversed about the interesting fact that some ingredients in meals just can't be substituted. This is also one of them. Tuna pizza - as pictured - only works with canned tuna. :) Otherwise you don't get the taste and texture. :)

Kind regards,
Oliver

The texture of the tuna does look good.

Is the tuna packed in oil versus water?  I got the impression that canned tuna in most of the world is packed in oil, but in the US packed in water seems to be more popular (possibly because it's viewed as being healthier?).

Yes, oil or fluid from processing the tuna itself - sometimes water is added to the latter. But never just water - at least for us - it does exist here as well.

Kind regards,
Oliver

Thank you for all the wonderful posts Oliver!  Your last couple of meals looked so delicious and all homemade!  We haven't been cooking much recently so mostly eating packaged convenience foods or my favorite, ordering from Uber Eats.

Thank you very much [member=66216]GoingMyWay[/member] !

We don't have Uber Eats locally, I have no idea how it works compared to home delivery, do they pick up from restaurants that otherwise would only do takeaway? Does it work with every restaurant as long as you get a "driver"?

Kind regards,
Oliver

You can order from restaurants that have signed up with Uber Eats.  There's a wide variety of restaurants and foods you can choose from.  There are the normal chain fast food places like McDonald's, Taco Bell, Chipotle, take out only restaurants, to regular full service restaurants.

It's my understanding that the restaurants set the Uber Eats menu prices.  The prices are higher than the restaurant, but that has to be the case so the restaurant doesn't lose money since Uber Eats takes a cut of the overall bill.

We usually order from restaurants that we wouldn't go to in person because of distance, bad location, or diffcult parking.  We don't mind paying the higher menu prices, service fee, delivery fee, and tip because of the convenience.

We ordered from a restaurant (Italian deli) about 18 miles away on Sunday.  That's quite a distance.  Most local restaurants that have their own delivery drivers limit the delivery range to about 3 miles max and there really aren't many restaurants nearby that offer their own delivery.  I had heard that it's too expensive for the restaurant to get insurance for the delivery drivers, but then again I'm not sure how pizza places like Domino's handle their insurance.

There is another service called Hyperflyer.  This is basically just a courier service (locally they use DoorDash to handle the "catering" order) so you have to arrange the order and payment with the restaurant directly.  They market this as being better for the restaurant because they're not losing money to Uber Eats and the consumer is paying regular menu prices.  That really opens up the restaurant possibilities, assuming they offer online ordering for pickup or can accept a credit card payment if ordering over the phone.  I've only used it a couple of times as it is a little stressful because you tell the restaurant the pickup time and then schedule Hyperflyer to pickup the order.  The order isn't always picked up promptly at your selected pickup time.  I nearly had a disaster one time when I realized the restaurant said you have to present the credit card you paid with when you pickup your food.  I called the restaurant in a panic and explained that someone else would be picking the order up who wouldn't have my credit card.  Everything ended up alright though.  The restaurant said that was fine and they wouldn't need to see the credit credit, but I think that was the last time I ordered with HyperFlyer.

The Boar pate looks really good!  Did it taste gamey?  Thanks for the link that explains Filet Americain.  I had never heard of that before.  Looking forward to seeing the rest of your haul!

Thanks for the in depth explanation of Uber Eats and Hyperflyer [member=66216]GoingMyWay[/member] !

I think it's great that Uber Eats kinda functions as a "range extender" when ordering meals. We sometimes think of something we would like to order, only to then realize that the restaurant won't deliver beyond  X kilometers. We wouldn't mind the higher price either, service needs to be paid.

Back when I extensively used cabs in our, as well as in the next larger city, I had some drivers personal # and was "known". So they would run errands for us, like getting a meal from a restaurant that wouldn't deliver at all. But obviously, adding the fare and a good tip, as well as tipping the restaurant staff ... It's not exactly "price sensitive", lol. ;)

I hope we get Uber Eats at some point available locally. Would be great.

Them taking a cut for the payment processing, I guess all the platforms do. I try to give our local restaurants that do delivery the business directly, ordering over the phone with them - and paying cash at the door. This way I know most of the $ stays with the restaurant, and the tip stays with whomever delivered the meal. (I've heard shady things about using the "add tip" on major platforms here in Germany, as apparently not all business owners pay it forward to the employees, and the platforms supposedly take a cut of the tip money they "process" as well.)

It is what it is. We would definitely enjoy a service like Uber Eats.

Again, thanks for the explanation! :)

Kind regards,
Oliver

That looks fantastic!

Yes, we have a built in deep fryer. Customized the cabinet, lost two drawers which are now just blinds and leaves us with only one functional drawer beneath the cooker/stove, but so worth it. :)

Here's a chocolate pie with morello cherries.
