Whats the Ultimate Shooting Board

I just picked up a Veritas shooting plane so i need to get at it and make a couple shooting boards.  I don’t think  you can make a single shooting board that would cover all applications but you sure could incorporate a few into one board.  I like tools that are multifunction so my question to the folks that are really into hand planes, do you use or have you seen shooting boards that are multifunctional?  With your experience, what would be the ultimate shooting board? Can you post pictures?  Im thinking of a shooting board that have multiple fences that can be easily removed.

This shooting board made and sold by Tico Vogt is highly evolved. The website is not. But, if you’ve developed your skills in rectilinear precision to a high level you can make your own.

I just picked up one of the Veritas shooting planes as well, and since time is always my limiting factor I picked up the Veritas shooting board.  Love both, as the shooting board came in really handy on a unique drawer front I was working on.

the ability for all angles comes in handy.  However I think eventually I will be making a ramped shooting board as the one section on the plane blade does tend to get over worked.

The “best” shooting board is the Stanley #52. Here is it with the Stanley #51, which was the model for the Veritas Shooting Plane and the LN #51 ...

I have used it with both these planes, and it is sublime. Here with the Veritas ...

The #52 is 120 years old and difficult/Expensive to find. LN began making one and then stopped. The track and fence offered by Lee Valley/Veritas is a the next alternative (I have not used one).

In regard to a shooting board, I was posting designs on the Internet for building ramped boards long before anyone else. The original Tico Vogt ramped board was a copy of one of mine. Since then they have evolved.

Here is the last design I made ..

Now, here’s the thing: you do not need a ramped shooting board for a shooting plane with a 20-degree skewed blade, as with the Veritas and LN. The ramp is designed for planes with squared blades. So, build a flat shooting board, either using these features, or build one around the Veritas track.

Excellent point.

Another reason why a ramp-less shooting board can be superior is when you want to use it to cooper pieces. It's harder, at least for me, to hold a piece lengthwise on a ramped shooting board.

I like Rob Cosman approach, where the board protrude the fence.

It is longer because he is using a much longer plane (a jointer).

The downside to this is that you need more space.

Talking about the rob cosman video?  I thought he was using a jack.  I know thats what he prefers.  He has a few shooting board videos, maybe im confused.

I think Vogt Shooting Board is now outdated. I saw one made from aluminium on CNC. Looks somewhat similar to Stanley #52 as it is also made of metal. Unfortunately, it is not production item still. But if one has access to good CNC and aluminium... maybe Woodpeckers can make next ultimate shooting board  [big grin]
