Just picked up the ks 120 reb and would like to bring it to workspaces but am torn between paying for the UG stand and wings set or building something. The entire UG setup will run me the almost as much as the saw, but i know it will work out of the box. Building something myself would be cheaper initially, but also cost me in time.

What systems have worked for you in these situations? Buy or build? I thought paying for plans (where someone has already done a good design and most of the thinking) makes building a good choice, but i haven't found anything online.

I modified a Milwaukee miter saw stand that I purchased years earlier for the Milwaukee miter saws I had. Then I purchased a Kapex, sold the Milwaukees and modified the Milwaukee stand. It works well if you don't need to be mobile. Mobility is the UG stand ace in the hole...nothing better.

I have had a Kapex with UG stand and extensions bought used over a decade ago. I very rarely transport the saw to remote worksites, but when I have the UG setup has been superb. I also wouldn't trade it as it sits in my shop for everyday use.

Check out the Paulk Total Station. Not necessarily the whole thing .. but how he evolved /and simplified/ his "wings" design can provide a lot of inspiration. That is the only solution I saw that comes close to the UG mobility.

His videos on it are a treasure trove of ideas proven in life, so not a waste of time either way.

I have the UG stand, only issue is making sure you get the wings connected correctly. After the first few times it is second nature.

For my first go-around on this thread, I heralded the idea of modifying what you already own, and that still works. But if you're serious about mobility, the UG cart is really the only way to go. Like Peter, I've lived with the Kapex being captured in the basement for the last 11 years and while my initial solution was inexpensive, it's time to move on. The original reason I purchased the Kapex was because of its accuracy and its light weight. So attaching it to a saw stand that's heavy and difficult to move doesn't make much sense.

I've got my Makita on an old Rousseau, similar in style to the #2850. I got it when I was trimming hotels. The compressor would ride on the lowest shelf to stabilize the whole stack and I'd roll from room to room doing case, base, wainscotting, crown, and closet packs. I literally had a recurring nightmare of halls stretching out and getting longer before my eyes. I still like the Rousseau. I've modded the shelfs and upgraded the casters. The stop rail/fence with extension was state of the art for the longest time. I've also got a Makita compact roller stand that I sometimes use but don't like.

Might depend on whether you need to use highly accurate stops for long cuts. The DeWalt folding aluminum stands are well made and not too expensive. I am pretty sure the attachment brackets accommodate a lot of different saws, and they pop on and off easily.

Here is the more robust, non-rolling stand. It's pretty easy to move around and has decent side extensions. It's about $250.

Not sexy, but this has worked quite well for me for years. Did all the trim in the first floor of our last home using this stand and wings. I forget where I got the connectors but they work fine. don't love the stand but it will roll over gravel and stores upright with the saw on.
