Hi Foggers, a family member wants me to build a dinner table with metal pipes as the base. The dimensions will be 38” wide x 68” long. I’ve looked at the pipe the big box stores carry but, I think it is too small in diameter. Does anyone have ideas or know of a source? Thank you.

Do they want it to be actual black pipe or metal tubing?
Many more choices in the latter category, and better quality and wider selection of finishes.
If you really want 1-1/2" or 2" Sch 40 pipe any plumbing supply in your area should have it, but the big box stores should have up to 2" IPS (actual OD is 2.375") in galvanized or black pipe.
You might also look at metal railing parts as an alternative. You can find them on McMaster-Carr's site too.https://www.mcmaster.com/pipe-railing

Unless they specifically want threaded pipe I would consider looking at Speedrail. There are more fitting options to attach the legs to the table top, you have a better ability to add intermediary supports, you can avoid all threaded connections if you prefer, and you are not limited to stock lengths to build your table as you cut the tubing to length and secure all fittings with hex screws. You also get the benefit of no future surface corrosion as the components are made of thick walled aluminum.
If you consider this route, you should know that all dimensions are I.D. It is a common mistake for people to assume it is O.D. and are quite surprised when the materials arrive being larger than they expected. You would need to paint it black as you have already indicated you are willing to do.

The most expensive part of this project is the actual cutting and threading of the pipe. The pipe itself is relatively (dirt cheap) cheap.
You need to buy full length 10 foot sticks of the pipe from HD and they will cut and thread the pipe to your specifications.
Have a chat with them, I purchased several 10' length sticks of 3/4" galvanized for $14 and had them cut it into 5 each 2' lengths threaded on both ends...cost...$14 and that included the pipe.
In other words, it cost me nothing for the custom cutting and threading services.
