Who smokes a cigar while woodworking? This guy does.

The video is about cleaning and adjusting a MFT table. He lights up a cigar about halfway through. (He does have an ashtray). Will wood absorb the odors of cigar smoke? I know clothing will.

I automatically discount the advice in the video because of the cigar smoking. That is likely more a fault of mine than the smoker.

I've been a person who enjoys cigars (sometimes, quite avidly) and will enjoy a cigar in the evening while listening to the Shop Talk Live podcast. I have enjoyed a cigar while working in the various industries I've been in, but I have yet to enjoy a cigar while woodworking. I've thought about it. I've come close. I haven't yet, but I gotta love that this guy does!

Cigar or no cigar, we can see this guy has his Festool priorities straight.

Mike is a hoot and a true lover of tools. I've never been a regular, but at least once a year I'll check-in just to see how he's doing. Tobacco is my Kryptonite, so I have to avoid with extreme prejudice.

My father was a salesman. When he visited customers, he would hand out good cigars. So when I got my first job as a salesman, I too gave out cigars. They seemed much appreciated.

One day I was visiting a customer and all the women in the office were giving me a very cold treatment. I asked what was the problem. And the receptionist replied, “Every time you visit, I go home and my clothes smell like cigars and I have to get them dry cleaned.”

I thought about that and said, “Sorry about that. How about I give the cigars to you and you can give them to the bosses just before they leave for the day.?” (There were three brothers who owed the business—so probably a lot of smoke.)

She smiled, “That would work”. And that was what I did each time I visited, and I was well received after that. I think I paid $0.25 each for the cigars (just over $2.00 each in today’s dollars.) I don’t think I would consider giving them out in 2026 though.

The only thing I thought was lacking from the video was a glass of whisky!

Isn't that mandatory when lighting up a cigar?
