We've all probably at least once regretted not following the maxim "Measure twice, cut once"

We'll I would like to add an addendum: "Calculate your cut list twice, buy once"

This dummy wnet to the lumber yard today having not double checked my cut list to stock calculations and managed to buy twice as much lumber as I needed 🤪 🤪 😁😁

Just saying....

my cut list said 2x on the sheet. as in, two same sheets. guess who cut and assembled and spent 3hrs looking for missing pieces

If I ever have to cut ornate internal/external compound mitres, I always plan for double the timber! ;-)

That's better than cutting drawer parts, from someone else's cut list.....and missing that little 2x
Been there

Also, I really hate blue Hi-lighters, for the same reason. I have missed more things that were hi-lighted with blue than for any other reason. It's like it has been redacted. It's not better, it's way worse.

I avoid rulers as much as possible. Instead of measuring, I typically take the piece of lumber to the project (or the project to the lumber) and directly transfer the dimension. I make far fewer errors when I don’t use a ruler.

I make a cut list typically by drawing a sheet of plywood on graph paper and marking out the cuts. I write in the dimensions and a “x ?” (“Times a number). As I make the cuts, I cross out the section that is complete. This also gives me the layout of the cuts.

The same holds true for boards. I draw the board and mark off the cuts. If I need 6 boards, I draw 6 boards, all with the finished sizes indicated.

So my shopping list becomes my cut list.

I don’t even have to know how to count. I just match the boards to the drawings and when they are the same, I’m done.

So with my system, I don’t have to know how to use a ruler or how to count. Fewer areas for errors.
