Why do I keep breaking my hearing protectors? My wife says my head isn't that big.[attachimg=1]

I had a similar pair of spring-loaded 3M's snap on me last night in exactly the same spot, right as I lifted them off.  It seriously felt like I got beaned in the head.  A recent purchase, so back they go...

I've had that happen.  I don't buy ones that have a plastic top anymore, only metal wire.  peltor?  Gun shops might be better than hardware stores.

Thanks. Those sthil ones look great, I hope I can find someone similar.

I thought this last pair was a winner, they seemed to have metal in the bridge. They had lasted months.

The thing about the plugs that I've used is when I take them out and put them down, I don't feel right putting them back in, I guess they are so cheap I can just get another set, but if I could find a pair of over the head ones that don't break I like their convienence more.

3M makes plugs that are on a cord
When you take them out just let them hang around your neck
I also use them when I go shooting at the range

I have a set of QB2 HYG Supra-Aural by Howard Leight. They NRR is 25, lower than the foam earplugs (which are usually 29 or 30). However, I've found that they are fine with all my newer tools and dust collectors as these tools aren't as noisy as my older tools and, therefore, I don't need quite as much noise reduction from hearing protectors.

The the 2 harder foam plugs are tied together with a flexible plastic band which, expands easily and hasn't yet broke for me. The foam plugs don't go all the way inside the ear, but seem to be effective in reducing the noise to the point that it's not an issue. The band fits comfortably around my neck and, since the plugs don't go into the ear, they can just be taken out or put in quickly and frequently without a problem. The band will keep the plugs comfortably hanging around your neck either with the band in front or around the back of your neck.

If I am planing wood for a long period of time I still use the crushable foam one-use ear plugs because they are the most effective I've ever used (Sparkplugs by Moldex with a NRR of 30), but I use the Howard Leight QB2's the rest of the time. They work great for me. I'm sure you can find them online.
