Why do things in my shop seem to swell up and not fit anymore?

I thought it was only my waistline, but other things are also swelling up and not fitting anymore. Evidence for your consideration:

After dinner tonight I just couldn't wait to play with my new Festoys so I mosied out to the shop and grabbed one of my new Systainers. I started with the Router Bit one, since that is what frustrated me just the other day. I grabbed the few bits that I had organized, then collected all the other loose bits that I could lay my hands on quickly. They all fit in the Systainer nicely, with room for more:

Yep, it looks nice. Now let's close the lid:

DOH!

OK, forget that for now. Grab a SYS1 and see how my Sawzall blades fit:

OK, that works. There are about a hundred blades in there, most scored for a dollar from Home Depot. Now let's try the blades for my TS-75:

OK, that works too. And now to close the lid:

Nope - that won't work the way I had planned to store them. But yep - it seems to work just like my waistline!!!

So I gave up and came back into the house. Some days it just doesn't pay to chew through the restraints...

Is your router bit Systainer a Sys2 or the Sys1? Some people get the Sys2 and put the insert in it. I got the router bit systainer long ago and returned it as virtually all my bits needed careful placement to avoid the ribs on the lid.  A Sys2 would have worked better.

This is a SYS1, Paul, but is likely to get moved to a Sys2 to solve this exact problem.

And I forgot to mention that I got a pretty good slice in my thumb while pushing in one of the router bits. Yep, it was sharp!

Now where did I put that MedTainer?

Oh, that's right - they aren't ready yet. I need to quit injuring myself until they get here!

I got the router bit systainer too. By default it comes in a Sys1 but if you have any bits such as door bits or vertical panel raising bits the Sys2 is required to accommodate these taller bits. I bought mine from Toolhome and Tom swapped me to a taller systainer with difference in cost.

Thanks for the heads up on the sys2 vs. sys1. I was planning on picking one up in the near future.

Tonight I found some more of my router bits - the last of them I think - so I took a break from cleaning up to put them where they belonged and move my router bits from a Sys1 to a SYS2. Here is the final result:

I am pretty happy with it. And the lid closes!

Looks like you have fallen prey to one of the fundamental laws of physics. I won't take credit for discovering it because I am sure it was observed in nature long before my time. But I am giving it my name because I can.

Mann's Law of time and space: "No matter the size of the storage vessel it will eventually become too small." To wit: Drawers are never deep enough. In short order, they become impossible to close without 'rearranging' the contents.

AS genius as they are, Systainer are never tall enough. If they made a Sys-15 someone would need a Sys-16. [scratch chin]
