Why I try not to be overly friendly in the Generally Friendly Chat forum

Hmmm, I wasn't really keeping track, but most of the replies took anywhere from 30 - 60 seconds.
A really interesting reply to your enquiry...almost scary really...nope correction...as in really scary. 😖

I'll tell you straight out, if I start to see you sign your posts as 4nthony.ai. I'm gonna get very nervous.

And I suppose that Joshua in War Games was just another LLM when it realized there were no winners in the game of mutual destruction. I liked HAL in 2001. Heartless. Bloodless. A computer through and through.
Both of those, and many, many before, were representations of TRUE AI. The 'original' meaning of the word.

What is sold as 'AI' these days, does have none of the 'thinking', not to mention 'self-awareness', qualities those artist representations had.

An LLM AI would all happily go full nuclear /no ability to comprehend/ and an LLM HAL would never do anything 'worthy' as it would be incapable to react to new circumstances.

Sorry to be negative.

The marketing #&@$ that completely destroyed a meaningful term /for non-professionals, those in the field do understand the farce/ just pisses me off. What is worst is that casual people /voters/ will now underestimate a real AI when is shows up based on the hands-on 'experience' with the non-AI 'AIs' they got acquainted with. And there is a material danger in that. There is a reason Musk is raising alarm .. whatever one thinks of him, he understands the danger /of underestimating/.

When spell checkers first came to the computer scene, I was convinced that they would make me a “lazy typist” and a “sloppy speller”.

To the contrary, by constant repetition, the spell checkers trained me to be a very good speller. I still get an occasional typo, but actual misspellings were rare.

That is no longer the case.

The A.I. spell checkers now decide that I used the wrong word and change it. I now make more corrections to undo the A.I. changes, than the spell checkers are doing to correct my errors.

And this is “progress”.

Addendum:

“Bureau” used to make me type several variations before it looked right. No longer.

And even more embarrassing was that “comb” would defeat me. Come? Coam? Colm?
