If you follow my blog or follow me on Twitter, you're aware of the large table I'm building.  I've been documenting the process live on Twitter and posting the sessions on my blog.  The project starts in Session 1 but what I want to bring to your attention is Session 9, or Why I'm Ordering a Domizilla (DF-700).

In this session, my task was to cut mortises and make floating tenons to join the two slabs.

Simple, right?  Well for a number of reasons including dealing with router issues, positioning the slabs and then the actual routing, it took me the whole day to cut the joints and dry-fit the slabs.  I separated the slabs to start cutting the joinery at 3:09pm and put them back together for the dry fit at 10:29pm.

Okay, these are NOT your garden variety mortise and tenon joints.  In fact, these floating tenons make even the a DF-700 tenon look puny.

Would you believe that to cut the mortises, I had to run a router for about 50 minutes?  Add to that wrestling with the heavy and awkward slabs and the time spent making the floating tenons.  Yep.  I'm ordering a Domizilla.

I don't think I dare follow your project ... I have this place 5 minutes from my door ... http://www.time4timber.com.au/list-of-slabs.html

Last thing I need is anything inspiring  [big grin]

No doubt you've detailed it in you progress, but for the chronically lazy, could you tell us what timber that is?

Kev.

PS I prefer "King Dom" to Domizilla - but only because it was Paul Marcel that came up with it  [big grin]

Hi Kev,

Great pictures on that website.  For your own good, I've blocked your IP address from viewing my website ;)

The table is maple.

King Dom is also prety good.  I'll have to see if I can come up with my own name...

Kev,

No fair I almost snorted tea out my nose when I read ".... Last thing I need is anything inspiring..."

As to your name issue...I have it on good authority that Paul has hacked into the trademarked files and now the official real name is "Domizilla"...  rummer has it that the Syslite is going to be released as Whinifred..... oh the humanity.....curses to IT people.

Either way  I need a sanding party....  (Sanding Party = Beer, Festool and splitting up 100 sheet boxes of sand paper)

Cheers,
Steve

extremely cool looking. my back's hurting thinking about moving that  [big grin]

How much beer = enough beer + 3 extra cases

Didn't you learn any formulas in college ???

Love the project, Chris!  While following you on twitter that night and in chat, I was thinking... Domizilla is sitting here bored, but getting him to Vancouver overnight would have cost... a Kapex, in Canadian!

Eager to see the whole top put together; that spin match will be fantastic with the live edge inside and softened edge on the outside.

Also cool to see a sliding table saw in use for so much of this; never got to use one so it's nice seeing a real one not a regular table saw with a slider accessory.

I'm buying a Domzilla because of the increased size mortises it provides.  If I could figure a way to run Watts drills in the Domzilla I could eliminate my bench mortise machine for those time when I want square corners (without a chisel).
The Watts drills do a great job of making square holes in steel.
What sorcery is this!

Very cool, my mother's 90 year old cousin sent me this video a few months ago.

Ron,

That is some piece of machinery!

I have looked at other mortising devises such as slot mortisers and router jigs, but all of them would be less practical for the work I'm doing.  Imagine clamping half of this table top to a slot mortiser's table!
