Wipe on Poly/Varnish

I am thinking of using this in satin for an upcoming project on mountain ash and pine.

Those with experience, please relate some of your tricks/problems etc,.

Ps. Probably use FestonWeston due to availability but open to other recommendations.
 
I did a desktop using general finishes satin gel. The top was birch edged with poplar. It turned out pretty nice. Compared to wipe on semigloss that did on purpleheart. Much prefer wipe on gel satin. Switching to 1500 grit pads over steel wool worked better for me in between coats.
 
I use wipe on poly quite a bit.  And you don't have to buy it "pre-made". You can thin varnish or poly with mineral spirits. Most cans say do not thin but they can easily be thinned. Most varnishes and polyurethanes are too thick since the manufacturers are trying to keep VOC numbers low  to meet stricter environmental regulations.

Want to make your own "Danish Oil"? Equal parts varnish (or poly), boiled linseed oil, and mineral spirits.
