Wood Movement in this table top??

On vacation last month I saw this table through a store window while waiting to be seated at a restaurant next door. It was after hours and I couldn't go in and look at, it but was struck by how beautiful it was. I can envision a process (very tedious) to cut, glue and clamp the pieces to render the table top but am completely in the dark as to whether wood movement in the wedge shaped components would be a big issue. I guess it could also be parquetry or high end veered ply, but from outside the window it looked like hardwood.

Appears to be walnut, guessing grain orientation would be a consideration but all in all the construction nuances are above my pay grade.
Anyone have insight or care to comment??

That is marquetry. Veneer glued to a stable substrate. The design is a basic sunburst. Google and thou will be enlightened.

Done similar on a pair of doors. As mentioned a stabile substrate is necessary.

The material is sapele.

Funny part is they only lasted two years. The Sheridan in Cleveland at Hopkins Airport they were installed in was closed and succumbed to the wrecking ball. I guess you can say “movement” destroyed them.

It's always sad when you hear things like that. A lot of what I make comes from reclaimed timber, so it's just a tragic waste when good resources get destroyed en masse.
