Why???

By the time I landed one in Oz I could have got a Mafell DD40.

"Ultimate" isn't the adjective that immediately springs to mind for me.

PLEASE .. If anyone can explain why they'd consider this I'd be very interested.

If you're doing thousands of dowels  the Mafell  might be the way  to go. For someone  not  doing that many a  cheap jig  will probably be a better option.

There seems to be a disturbance in the force with your the Lamello medal haul, and Mafell mentions.

I'm a big fan of Woodpeckers and they really do a lot of things very well...but this one I just don't understand???  [jawdrop]

In a Systainer, this gizmo is over 70% of the price of a new DF 500. [eek] [scared] Throw in the optional metric bushings and you're within $15 of a DF 500. [scratch chin]

After I purchased the DF 500 I threw my doweling jigs away...haven't had a need for them yet and I don't suspect I will.

Seems like Woodpeckers is grasping at straws lately, their last 3 NEW offerings, track square, blade gauge & stainless triangle were all rather mediocre.

Didn't realise  it was so expensive. [eek]
And you still need a drill  machine.

However, it is an engineering marvel, quite elegant and suitable for display on the coffee table when you have friends over. They will be impressed that you can afford such nice shiny tools.

A WP dowelling jig seems so quaint now. I had an old Stanley rotating dowel jig and put together quite a few projects with it. I still have it  as a reminder of the past.

The Woodpecker engineering did remind me that there has to be a market for a self-centering Domino 500 jig similar to that promised by RTS Engineering. If Woodpecker had devoted their skill to such a add-on, I think there would be a terrific market.

I was impressed with the Woodpecker dowelling jig fence system. Hopefully someone will step in and produce a self-centering Domino add-on.... perhaps with a more workable fence system... TSO, Woodpecker... Seneca... anyone.. anyone....? RTS Engineering seems to have left the building...

It's a hobby item. It does not have to make sense.
Some waste money on baseball tickets, some on restoring classic cars, some on beautifully made woodworking machinery.
I wonder what percentage of Festool items purchased by hobbyists on this forum never made economic sense.

P.S. The way dowel spacing works in that jig is pretty cool. Try that with DD40.

Indeed.
How many  big shiny  cars (automobiles)  make  sense? My  headless horse  (VW transporter  van)  has served me well now for 8 years  and no need for a car.

the DOMINO system is on our radar for an improvement. We need more definitive problem statements from users: what it should doe, what it must do -  and what it should avoid and what it must avoid.
Maybe that should be a separate thread

[member=59331]TSO Products[/member] yes, a centring clamp for the Domino and while you're at it .. an adaptor plate for the CMS OF fence to connect to an Incra positioner - robust and include a right angle for the DC hose [wink] [big grin]

How about making it affordable (instead of the OTT insanity) and available earlier than 18 months would be a good place to start.

[member=14478]Wooden Skye[/member] agree.

That OTT lark is crazy ... you need to factor in your life expectancy before you commit to buying [big grin]

Check out their Behind the Design video that accompanies this doweling jig. I can certainly appreciate the time and effort that go into each of their tools, which justifies the premium prices of Woodpecker products.

I've got a LOT of Woodpecker gear in my arsenal, all of which I use. Some are OTTs, which I've waited for, others simply purchased since I felt it was what I needed and was worth the money. I looked at the email for this one and it was a head scratcher. Questions I ask when I see these are "do I need this?", "how would it help me in my woodworking?" and "is it worth the price?". Answers obviously determine whether I purchase or not. I just don't see a need in my shop for this. I have a Domino 500 and I own the Woodpeckers shelf pin jig. I wonder how many of these they will actually sell, but that's their marketing decision.

Still, it's a brilliant piece of gear, seems to be well thought out and I'm always enthused to see another Woodpecker OTT email, wondering what have they thought up now?

Great idea for a separate thread.
a separate thread has been started in Other Tools & Accessories: "DOMINO accessory wish list anyone?"
Please post a description of needed accessory enhancements.

Hi!

I like it, in the way that I generally have a love for high quality, well engineered, "mechanical" cool stuff/gizmos. I do believe that a couple of prototypes and a lot of thinking/engineering were needed to narrow it down to this state and functionality, add the fact that it's shop made in the US by a rather small business... Like I said, I really like it.

Will I buy it? No. I have focussed on the Domino for exactly this purpose and I guess the Domino is a lot less fumbling and more versatile/faster to use for me than this jig. But it's cool non the less and it will find it's lovers (& buyers) I'm sure. I do agree with what was said about it being more about "wanting" it than actually really "needing" it.

Still, it's damn cool...

Kind regards,
Oliver

Actually the separate thread "domino accessory wish list anyone?" has been relocated by the MODERATOR to the DEALER area of the FOG forum

Agree with everything that's  been said so far -- amazing looking, wonderfully engineered jig, but if you're going to spend that kind of money, why not get the Domino or the Mafell?  Especially given how much crossover there is already between Woodpeckers and Festool users.

I suppose if you were going to be building a bunch of cabinets out in the woods and had no access to power, other than the cordless drills you brought along some extra batteries for.
