Since this topic area is about building materials this seemed like the right place for this since one of the objectives is to determine what happens to wood in space and if it can be used for construction in space.

Perhaps this topic should be merged with the other one on lumber prices, as the cost of building the wooden satellite must have gone up astronomically.

It has nothing to do with current lumber prices. Which by the way are now dropping so get ready to buy.

CubeSats have been around for more than 20 years. They are launched by universities, Amateur Radio clubs, NASA, and other groups. Not every satellite is the size of Hubble, most are much smaller. Cal Poly developed the CubeSat standard, but at the time the name CubeSat had not been thought of. CubeSats fall in the class of satellites known as Picosats based on size and mass.

Believe it or not early CubeSats design was influenced by the 10cm plastic cube shaped packages that Beanie Babies were sold in.
