Finally bought a Domino!  [big grin]  [big grin]  [big grin]

Been after one for a long time, but couldn't justify (or afford) it. Just got confirmation of a small job I'm doing for a friend, and there's no way of doing it without a Domino, so had to do it. Honest. [wink]

Got the machine ex-demo, and got the domino assortment systainer with all 5 sizes of cutter & tennons for a knock-down price off eBay, too. Saved well over 100GBP of the list prices! Having said that, with what I'm getting for doing the job I'm still down over 200 quid...

Only other downside (since I'm not working at the moment, and SWMBO is paying for them [scared] ) is that I've got no excuse anymore for not doing all the projects in the house...

At least I might have something interesting to post soon, rather than drivel like this post [tongue]

Nice one Jonny, how much did you pay for the ex demo donimo ?  I bought mine ex demo, although i was the first person to demo it  [big grin]  I paid 400 gbp for it & he threw in the domino systainer also, sweet deal i think.  I never got the 4mm cutter or dominoes as they wernt out then but i can live with that.

Was using my domino all day today, superb tool that until you have one you don't really realise all the things you can use it for.

Ah, I'm envious of you Jonny, I'd love to get a Domino. Will be really interested to get your views on it as a new user and also to see some of the work you use it for.

Enjoy making some holes!

Not much work up your way Jonny ?

I have been quiet since before christmas , doing 1 and 2 day weeks I must admit im not out there looking round but maybe I will have to soon to pay the bills. Hopefully things will pick up in Feb.

Just started a job for an old customer , wardrobes and a desk etc but they need lots of work in the future new kitchen etc so fingers crossed.

I keep looking at those Dominoes they were doing the 110v ones for ?495 before Christmas in Rutlands and I was tempted but have not got the money. [sad]

Woodguy, I'm well jealous now - that's a hell of a good deal!

Paid GBP550 for the machine (10% off list price of GBP611), and got the domino systainer for GBP130 (about 31% off list of GBP188.70).

I was working (employed) until August when I got made redundant. I decided that it wasn't worth going self-employed again as there wasn't much work about, so I've been looking for another employed job instead, but not found anything yet. Got a couple of possible jobs in the pipeline, but until then I'm just doing odd jobs for friends (if you know what I mean ;) ) to get by.

Of course.

But since I'm not even breaking even, there aren't any earnings...

If I declare that, do you think HMRC will give me money back?  [smile]

By the way - any of you guys going to KBB in March?

Now you're in trouble. Enjoy the Domino, it can be a lot fun. Best of luck with the jog search.

You'll need to update your signature line :)  You'll definitely have fun with it and you will definitely find 1,000 other uses for it

KBB looks cool but yea, it is a bit far.  If it was an ac/dc  concert then that would be a different story  [big grin]

Johnny.

Yes you can offset your costs against tax paid...

At least you will get 20% back in hard cash.

Register with HMRC as self employed - also you will get class 2 or is it 4 exception because you are not earning enough. Get VAT registered and get a further 17.5% - especially as your outlay is more than income!

Remember to claim 40p per biz mile for the first 10,000 miles after that it's 25p per mile.

If you play your cards right - you will get a repayment that will equal the tax you paid whilst your where PAYE.

I've got a spreadsheet to help if you want - drop me a pm if interested...

I do this and get a nice cheque from HMRC every year that pays for my tools.

Oh forgot to mention - I've got a Domino and I'm still finding different ways to use it...

From cutting holes for fezzi clamps, aligning cabinets and about a 1000 other uses - really good - even made my own lose tenons for my workbench...

I still use my biscuit jointer and I have a Mafell doweller that I wouldn't be without...

Tom,

Thanks for that but it was tongue-in-cheek - I was self-employed until about 18 months ago, so I know what's what.

When I was made redundant, I looked into going SE again, but the numbers just didn't add up. I'm justlooking for an employed job now, I don't want the hassle.

Hassle, tell me about it.  Been self employed for nearly 5 years now.  If i had my time over again, I'm not sure if i would have made the same choices  [unsure]  Had a call from my accountant at the weekend telling me how much tax i have to pay  [scared]

Is it all worth it ????

I am really surprised that you all hate being self employed I find it much better tax wise than being employed.

I have been self employed mainly as a sub contractor since 1993 apart from about 6 months I suppose when I had to go paye for a large company and I must have paid more tax in those 6 months than I had paid for a whole year being self employed.

All I can say is it works for me.

Hmm, maybe i need i better accountant.  I wouldn't say i hate it, it does have its moments but its not the pleaserable experience i thought it was going to be.  Called out by the police at 1.15am this morning to board up 2 windows in -3 temp then back to bed wide awake at 3am.  Back to work then at 8am.  Wouldn't have done that if i was employed !

Its cool that its working out for you though
