HI THERE !
I PERSONALLY USE RED WINGS BOOTS . BOUGHT MODEL 3508 (8")SUPER COMFY FOR ALL DAY,THEN I BOUGHT THE SAME BOOT IN 6" MODEL 3506. HAPPY WITH BOTH BUT THE SIX INCH IS EASIER TO GET IN AND OUT OF , THEY ARE BOTH MADE IN USA .THEY MEASURE YOUR FOOT IN STORE AND GIVE YOU THE BOOT FOR YOUR FOOT LENGTH AND WIDTH . WHEN THE SOLE GOES THEY CAN RESOLE THEM FOR $80 . THEY ARE STEEL TOE.
AND OH YEAH THEY ARE MADE IN USA. [big grin] [big grin] [big grin]
THE OTHER BOOTS IV'E HEARD ABOUT ARE DAYTON BOOTS ( THEY TAKE ABOUT A MONTH TO MAKE THEM FOR YOU)
AND THE OTHER ONES ARE VIBERG WORK BOOTS
HOPE THIS HELPS

GORAN

After trying 7 or 8 different kinds of work shoes and taking one pair back I settled on these. They are from Timberland and have a steel toe (so my toes will not be crushed when i drop that 4 x 8 sheet goods on them). Tried the ones with a composite toe but they did not fit like these did. I did like the weight difference with the composite toe, much lighter. Very comfortable although nothing like the gel walking shoes I use each AM.

Thanks for all the help

I have a back problem which starts with one leg shorter than the other, or is it one is longer than... ???
Anyhow, I need a full sole lift.

There is one guy local (actually you could say "Loco") who does a fine job but I have to practically resort to fisticuffs to get him to do it the way i know it should be done.  His way and I cannot walk 100 yards before excruciating pain sends me crawling back home.  I have found a shoemaker who will, and does it to my specs, but after three months, the soles are starting to separate.

For many years, I used Herman's.  The sole and the heel were separate pieces and it was very simple to just take both pieces off and add the lifts and reattach the outer soles. Sometimes, just add a tap over the sole and another to the heel. That never seemed to work out as the tap pieces wore down too quickly.  Today, the sole has to be sliced (sort of like resawing in wood work.) and the full sole added with the original sole still being the wear surface.

My question: Is there a company that will add a 1/2" full sole to a boot?  I tried a few years ago and came up empty.

The 3 boot companies that I can think of that might be able to help are Wesco Boots in Scappoose, OR  Whites Boots or Nick's Boots both in Spokane WA.  All 3 make custom fitted boots normally for wild land firefighting and logging.

I know they offer a +- 1/4 inch on the heel not sure about the entire sole though.  They make custom fitted boots so they may be able to build them with the lift in it.  The heel and sole are different pieces however I don't think it would be easy to remove the sole as it gets sewn on.

I have a pair of Wesco Firestormer boots I don't wear any other shoes. The pair I have are 4 years old and still have a few years left before I will need to have them rebuilt.  I was lucky to get a year out of a pair of Redwings before.  It did take a while to break in but after that they have been very comfortable.  They are heavy the pair I have is around 8 pounds.  They are also expensive however as they have held up better than any other boots I have used they will be cheaper in the long term.

It's amazing how much longer boots wear now than they useter.  When i was 38, i went thru 3 pairs per year.  Now I am 39, they seem to last all the years I have been 39. ::)

I used to wear 8" Danner Super Rainforest boots for field work, walking and hiking over rough terrain.  They were great boots, I even wore them for snowshoeing.  After many years of use and abuse, though, I was at the cobbler's, trying to talk him into resoling/rebuilding them yet again, and he finally looked at me and said, "Maybe it's time to invest in new boots."

I wanted a replacement that would work for showroom, shop, and install, like an oxford with a hiking sole.  Wesco's John Henry shoe looked awesome, but steeply priced.  My father wore Whites as a logger, averaging a decade per pair, so I had confidence in their reputation.  Whites had a walking shoe that pretty much fit the bill, for $250 vs $450+ for the Wescos.  I went to the local dealer and they measured me, I paid an extra $15 for a hiking sole, and then I waited two months for my custom size 12F's to arrive.  I put Superfeet insoles in them immediately, and after a week or two of break-in, they worked great.

Eventually, though, the Vibram sole cracked under the arches and water could get in.  I went to the regular cobbler and tried to get them re-soled with the same exact sole, no dice.  I ended up sending them to White's through the dealer, where I was told they could be resoled for $65.  I bought a pair of Keens on sale for $50 at REI to remain shod until the Whites returned.

Two weeks later I got a call from Whites telling me that the shoe would have to be rebuilt because it wasn't designed with enough leather to be resoled.  I said go ahead, even though the price went up to $140, because they fit well and the uppers, at least, were really durable.  When I got them back, they were almost a half-inch shorter, because they had rolled up the leather on the bottom of the upper to get some purchase and have something to stitch a sole to.  They didn't fit with the inserts, and I couldn't wear them for more than 90 minutes without switching back to the Keens because of the pain.

A half-year later, I saw an ad for the local shoe store saying the White's rep would be on site for their sale.  I showed up with my shoes and gave them back to him and showed him the White's catalog at the store that said all of their shoes and boots were resolable and rebuildable.  A few weeks later they sent them back with some thin insoles and some signs that some other stitching had taken place.  I got some more wear out of them until the soles failed again.  I just threw them out.  I owned them for about four years, but had about six months where I didn't wear them at all.  Overall they cost me almost as much as the Wescos would have, not including the stop-gap Keens, which I have owned longer than the Whites (my wide feet blew out the stitching at the toe caps on both sides of both shoes over time, but the cobbler put them back together, stronger, ONCE, for less than $20).

I'm currently starting my second year on a pair of Thorogood work shoes, with no repairs done or needed.  The lining has worn off the heels inside, but I wear wool socks year round and don't notice it.  They're comfortable, they stand up to glues and solvents, they come in wide sizes, and they're US made.  I bought them off Amazon before the work shoe sale for $135.

Nicks has a great reputation for custom boots, as well as Hoffman's, but after dealing with Whites, I'm not sure past performance is an indicator of future results.
