I've installed a typical Workbench wheels lift mechanism several years ago and it worked very well, maybe too well, until the "heavy duty" Ipe board bowed under pressure:

Why not reinforce the ipe with steel like a Flitch beam?

I will probably reinforce it with metal.

In my opinion the main reason for failure is the design. I've attached a Sketchup drawing that should improve your device. Also you would get more strength with the addition of a good quality glue and predrilled fasteners the right size for your wood components.
