The past couple month I've been keeping my eyes open on ebay for older hand planes.  I've scored a No.7 , No. 6 , and No.5  Stanley plane in the past few weeks.  I received them all with blades that needed to be sharpened.  I'm just getting started with planes so I didn't want to spend a bunch of cash on expensive planes.  Last weekend Woodcraft had a 10 and 15% sale so I used that as an excuse to buy the Work Sharp 3000 and a couple accessories.  Here are some pics of my experience with the Work Sharp 3000 this morning.  This is the first chance I had to play with it and I'm very happy I got it.  I'm sure a lot of you guys have this system already.  But for those guys looking for a very easy way to sharpen chisels and plane blades.  This has go to be the best system on the market. IMO.

This is the items that I picked up.

This is what comes in the box.  Just about everything you need.  I added a glass plate so I could have an abrasive on each side of the glass plate.

[attachimg=#]

I bought the wide blade attachment.  The Work sharp 3000 will handle up to a 2" chisel.  The No.7 plane blade that I sharpened is 2-1/4" wide, so I needed to buy the wide blade attachment.

This is the blade that I sharpened.  It's obvious this blade needs some TLC.

[attachimg=#]

with the bevel guide set, it's time to get crackin'.  The wide blade attachment comes with the bevel guide which is very easy to use.  Only need to tighten one thumb screw to attach the blade to the bevel guide.

First pass was with 120 grit.  It took about 5 minutes of sharpening.  But you can see, I'm on my way to perfection.

The system comes with a small crepe stick to clean the disk.

[attachimg=#]

After progressing through the grits I finished with a 6000 disk.  [eek]  mirror finish.  Maybe I'll pick up the leather honing disk for a better polish.

Time for some testing.  Pay not attention to the socks and flip flops.  [unsure]

Proof is in the shavings!

All and all, this is a freakin' sweet sharpening system.  I would recommend it guys looking to quickly and easily sharpen chisels and planes blades.
I have a little over $300 for this set up.  But well worth it.  Once I go through and sharpen all my chisels and blades, it will only take a quick second to resharpen them when needed.  The dry sharpening for me beats using the old school methods.  I don't want to spend a lot of time sharpening a chisel.  Most of my woodworking happens on the weekend.  I would rather be cutting wood, instead of preparing the tools needed to cut with.

Thanks for reading.  I was going to shoot some video footage of this, but I did a Youtube search on the Work Sharp 3000 system and I thought their was enough videos covering the system.

Nice review.

I've been thinking about getting the Worksharp for years.  I don't really do much with hand tools though. I really only have a basic set of bench chisels. Is there a set up to sharpen kitchen knives?

Seth

Here you go Seth.  I don't have the belt attachment but love my Worksharp.

Seth,  The Work Sharp 2000 has a Knife attachment.  I don't think it works with the 3000 model.
Work Sharp also makes a hand held sharpener for knives.  I bought the 3000 vs. the 2000 because of the lower RPM that the 3000 runs on, which is better for woodworking blades.  And the wide base attachment.  I can't remember ever needing to sharpen a knife.  We have the Ginsu set.  Which is very very sharp out the box.  I know, I cut my hand washing a knife  [scared].

I've got the 3000 and I got the knife sharpening belt set as part of a package deal. Ive not used the knife sharpener yet.

The 3000 is great, I made extra discs for mine out of mdf and I've bought 60 grit self adhesive sandpaper discs for rough grinding.

There's lots of videos on you tube, stumpy nub is a good guy he has some good ideas.

Excellent review.

I got the WS3000 two years ago. Since then I've stopped using my Tormek - the WS3000 is at least 10 times faster.
I've recently discovered the  Work Sharp WSSA0002601 WS3000 Tool Bar Attachment (Amazon sells them)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006MQ5CQ8/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
With this toolbar I can use all my Tormek attachments. Sharpening lathe tools or scrub plane blades is a breeze now.
I'm selling the Tormek - haven't used it for over a year.

btw. When I started using it, I was going all the way up to 6000 grit paper, but after a while I found
that 3 sizes (240, 400 and 600) grit is more than enough (for what I do)

The idea of using mdf discs + honing compound (stumpy nubs web site)  is also excellent.

Regards
george

Like mine as well, however I wish they made a jig for 13 inch plane blades.  I haven't used my Tormek near as much since buying the Worksharp 3000.  Eric is right when it comes to using the machine dry and it is very easy to keep chisels sharp or touch them up if they become dull.  The same company also makes the Drill Doctor and that is also a good machine.  I have one bench dedicated to my DeWalt planer and the two sharpening machines.

100% agree that this thing is a sweet machine

Tip, Fill out the warranty registration online, i don't usually ever do these but i noticed on the warranty card in the box that if you register your tool online they will send you a pack of free abrasives!  who doesn't love free stuff!!

I like my WS3000 too, but one thing I'm a bit set back about is that it does blow the sharpening dust all over the table which makes a bit of a mess with black fine metal sooth all over the place.

Should probably use some kind of respirator when doing the initial long sharpening sessions with this machine.
