Workshop Shelves vs Cabinets

I’m waiting for someone to come up with a barcode system for home owners.  This is how I think it should work.

I put tools away immediately or very soon after and what that does is reinforces your memory of where they are and when needed they are where they should be and there is no need for a protracted search which wastes time. I had a very big bench and all it got used for was a convenient place to stack stuff on so I cut it down to force me to put stuff away.

I always say to newcomers in team in IT that senior people can solve complex problems not due to their ability to remember. It is thanks their ability to forget. To forget the important. Leaving space for the important.

The issue is, over time we get too good at it ... and eventually start forgetting also the important.

Till we reach there, it is way more efficient to auto-discard information about where that casual tape measure was placed. Instead of consuming precious brain capacity storing that information.

We have 10 identical (checked) tape measures around our shop of 150 square meters where usually one or two people work. They cost € 50 for all of them. I think it was money well spent.

I worked in a parts warehouse and memory of where things were saved hours of checking a location every single time and the only way that happened was by repetition. Put stuff back where it belongs a few times and you will remember where it is. The biggest issue with this method is forgetting what you know when things are changed around for whatever reason.

This method is ineffective for me. I've tried. If I put tapes everywhere I think I need one, I'm wrong about where I need it and have to go looking. Then when I rely on one being in its assigned spot, it's not there. I now have a tape I can comfortably carry and I carry it with me all the time. Same with pencils. If I scatter them all through the shop, I can never lay hands on one. If I have one in my shirt pocket, I have one when I need it.

The french cleat idea sounds good.  I think I'll make some specific brackets for individual power tools that I use frequently and leave those along with a shelf or two in the middle.  The rest of the space I'm going to make up some cabinets like this:

These sound like a great idea to not have to worry about losing stuff in the back of the cabinet and making better use out of the depth.

Now I just need to decide if I should use the fancy prefinished ply I've got laying around or go out and buy some cheap plywood.
