Did the little blocks come with the plywood ([scared] [scared] [scared]) or did you add them to try to shore it up?

Yup, I've seen similar. Also found blue plastic pieces and other unidentifiable  items. All in big box plywood.

Also had stress cracks appear in the veneer layer  after staining. Couldn't see them before the stain went on. [mad]

Is that the ubiquitous "Sanded Ply" from HD?  I stopped buying that stuff a few years ago- truly reprehensible QC on that stuff.  PureBond tends to be better, but I still get some of that from time to time.

The little blocks was already in the plywood.
This came from the oldest lumber yard on the east coast.
The builder I am working for purchased the product. It is pantry shelving(paint grade). I showed the builder ne said it was cheaper than the birch(NO SH&T). We quickly came to an understanding that if he required the same finish look as the birch yielded then he would have to pay me to work around these kinda issues. He agreed to buy yhe better grade of ply.

The sheet on the bottom looks OK.  And the sheet you made the bench out of looks OK.  But I would only use that for something where appearance did not matter.  Like as a subfloor.

Problem is i didn't see it till i cut it. We will no longer be using it.

Regretfully we do see defective ply down here too, but fortunately in my experience in sales and use, this is usually restricted to non structural non furniture grades with correspondingly much lower prices.

Usually I only see delamination or air pockets in inner layers. Certainly not what we see here from [member=21294]Gr8trim4u[/member] . If this is not discounted non structural ply he should take it back.

Non structural ply has its uses however - assembly benches and Systainer cages.

Naw, that's even worse to use as a subfloor or underlayment, as there's no solid structure to support the layer on top. Think tile and grout, how long will that hold up when there are voids in the substructure? That's exactly the reason tile floors can fail...

From what I can tell  what you have there is an import plywood most likely China birch and all of it is pure garbage. Being a business I buy all our plywood wholesale even though all of my suppliers care this junk they sell it buyer beware. They will not take it back or exchange for another. We don't use it in our shop for obvious reasons but I have seen everything from razors to cigarettes in this stuff. I really fill sorry for all of the consumers buying this stuff for such an inflated price at the big box store without knowing what they are buying. A product we have been having excellent results with here lately is a maple plywood coming out of Spain called Garnica really good product and it's lighter.

Gr8trim4U, I saw that Hardwoods in the Rough in Manassas is carrying the Garnica.  Looks good from the side edges and the faces are pretty.

A&M Supply in Upper Marlboro also carries Garnica, and I concur that, based on samples that I've seen, Garnica is a very nice product.

All I have been using is Garnica. For paint/pigmented finishes, I use the pluma HDF. Their prefinished birch is awesome as well.
