If you aren’t thinking about cherry for a project because you’ve heard it’s difficult to work with or finish, you are missing out.

Here’s a couple of detail shots from a couple of pieces I’m working on.

Beautiful wood Ron. Cherry has been my favorite wood for over 50 years. All of the furniture, cabinets & moldings on the main floor of our house are made from cherry.

When I built my house (DIY) I bought poplar, made my own trim, and stained it to look like cherry.  Cherry is also my favorite wood, just could not afford it.

Cherry is a fantastic wood to work with. It machines well, holds profiles well and is tight-grained enough to sand very smooth. It has two possible issues. Bit/blade burning and blotching. Sharp tools and avoiding hesitation while cutting can minimize the burning. The blotching is primarily a stain issue. If you just clear finish it and allow it to darken on it's own naturally, that's not a problem either. Otherwise, you will have to address that.

I have not used cherry in years because it blotches so badly. I am eager to learn new tricks however.

Ron, that wood displays some really nice chatoyance!  Top for a table?  Will you meld that with one of your metal bases?  Please post your progress.

Thanks for sharing!

[member=30413]mike_aa[/member] Those two pieces are going to be floor lamps. Working on the feet now, One more coat of Osmo for them. Clean up the steel bases and then clear coat for those.

I'll let the Osmo cure and then assemble. I'll post some pics when they're done.
