I have a similar problem, however, I have that left nook on BOTH sides of my closet.  I think i'm just gonna put shelves.

My daughters had the same issues with their closets. After thinking about it for a while I reframed the front to be flush with the sides and ceiling and was able to make a nice built closet in for them with no loss space

I have in the past I've used this type of space as a hidden storage area. Maybe think about building a cabinet with a door that begins under the shelf rod made out of the same material as the closet system that you are going to use and get a hidden lock with the magnet key and euro hinges. makes a great place to stash long guns and paperwork. I'm afraid you've lost me. Just cover up that little section?

If you open the small area to the room cover the side facing the closet so items on the shelves will not fall off into the closet. Access is now from the bedroom no need to fight the clothes to get to the shelfs and allows you to design it as a simple closet shape.

I don't know how functional it would be, but what about a 'lazy susan' type arrangement. You'd swing it to the left, exposing the contents that are 'hidden' in that section?

Of course you'd have to leave the area in front of it unblocked, which may or may not result in additional storage area.

I don't know if you saw this when I posted it once before, but I had a 24" deep closet 8" wide, and it had two out swing panel doors that were 60" total.  I opened up the closet to 8' x 8' and built the three 32" wide 8' high cabinets and just slid them in.  To keep the carpet intact you talk about, you could open it up, and instead of 24" deep, make the cabinets 28" deep.  Take a little more material, but you gain a lot of drawer space.  Here is a photo.  I made them out of poplar and just cheap Lowe's Sandply for the carcases.  I used Sherwin Williams stain, 6 coats of hand applied wipe-on poly, sanded to 320 between each second coat, then finished with Bri wax applied with 0000 steel wool, then a coat of wax applied and buffed with micro fiber cloth.
