I don't know if you saw this when I posted it once before, but I had a 24" deep closet 8" wide, and it had two out swing panel doors that were 60" total. I opened up the closet to 8' x 8' and built the three 32" wide 8' high cabinets and just slid them in. To keep the carpet intact you talk about, you could open it up, and instead of 24" deep, make the cabinets 28" deep. Take a little more material, but you gain a lot of drawer space. Here is a photo. I made them out of poplar and just cheap Lowe's Sandply for the carcases. I used Sherwin Williams stain, 6 coats of hand applied wipe-on poly, sanded to 320 between each second coat, then finished with Bri wax applied with 0000 steel wool, then a coat of wax applied and buffed with micro fiber cloth.
