What is a good , but not silly expensive random orbit sander. mainly for paint removal etc .

thanks

For paint removal a RAS or the Rotex. The RAS is easier to handle for vertical  surfaces because it's smaller. The dust collection isn't quite as good as  Rotex though. The Rotex is nice because it can double as more a finish sander as well after the paint removal, but it cost a whole lot more.

Asking for something not expensive on this forum is a hard ask. Festool by definition is high end, not cheap and actually one of the most expensive brands in the US and abroad.

Expensive is the Mirka DEROS and the Festool ETS/EC.
Both are stunningly good in /5-mm stroke.
And both are good in that they can be used with a vacuum to get most all the dust and light enough to use vertically with ease.

Removing paint is often an outdoor effort and a mask can be as effective as a vacuum if the dust is not a hazard and can be blown away.

[member=3373]Dovetail65[/member] mentioned the RAS - which I have not used, but looking for a justification in order to get one.

Sometimes it is worth using a heat gun and a scraper to get the bulk off and then you can use a non-rotary sander.
That is also often quicker, but there is little joy in doing the effort...

So I would suggest looking at heat gun and scraper, which can pair nicely with a random orbital sander for the final work after the paint is mostly removed. There are also delta sanders for corners, and if the budget is limited then any old random orbital sander can do, and something like the discontinued DX93 can be nice for corners. I got a second hand one for ~250 and there is at least one here in the classifieds.

I have a cheap Bosch 5" RO. However once you use a nice sander like a DEROS or ETS/EC you may find that the others only get used when you have a second person sanding.

I have a deros and it's absolutely fantastic, can't comment on the ets/ec but I'm pretty sure it will be just as good. However I feel a rotex will be better for you if you want something for paint removal

There's no sander like that in the Festool line. Because they're all silly expensive.

Depends how you buy ! I tend to take the Second hand route as it always serves me well. I use a Mirka hand /manual for walls etc and thats amazing £4£ .

You didn't say how much paint you were going to remove.

A small amount    = random orbital sander
A medium amount = rotex or similar from bosch, makita, rupes to name a few
Paint stripping      = paintshaver pro... the thing just eats paint quickly all day long
