I recently bought a new 9" wood vise.  I am just getting around to mounting it on my work table.

It has a provision to allow adding sacrificial wood facing to the metal faces.

On the front face it has two holes where I can easily use wood screws to attach the sacrificial face.

But on the read face of the clamp the two holes are drilled and tapped.  So if I use that, then I have to screw it in from the inside and I have to counter-sink the screws.

Does anyone have an idea why they made one side threaded and the other side just two holes?

My guess is that the Rear jaw of the vise is designed to sit pretty much flush against the edge of the workbench. If you screwed your sacrificial jaw from the back in order to replace it you would have to unmount and remove the vise from the workbench. Having the face mounted from the inside allows you to replace without doing that.

I installed roll pins in the sacrificial hickory faces and then drilled out the holes in the vise jaws just slightly to accept the roll pins with a sliding fit.

I can take some photos later if you're interested.

That makes sense to me.  Thanks for the reply.

I bought this because it was on sale ($45.00 for a 9" vise sounded like a good deal).  I don't even know if I will use it.  For clamping my 35+ year old Black and Decker Workmate has been stepping up when needed.
