A Change is Coming!

I switched from that (un-named) site to FOG because the threads had a tendency of becoming nasty-bitchy.  I longed for the pastoral civility of a site like FOG.  I hope they don’t ruin it.

That's precisely the reason I stopped being a very active member on cnczone. This forum is so much more civilised, and the members provide so much information, help and support without added drama. This and the Australian Woodworkers Forum are probably the two best forums I've ever utilised.

About 26 years ago this forum began on Yahoo. When the prospect of becoming a stand alone forum was discussed a lot of us decided to use our actual names, which we thought would help inhibit bad manners.

It's somewhat surprising how civil this forum is even though the use-your-own-name idea didn't catch on. I put that down mostly to the attention paid by Peter and Seth but I do think the tenor that began way back then provided a vibe that people want to maintain

For those already posting concerns, I have had time to look at what the site will be.  They did a test conversion of the entire forum as of a particular date so that Seth and I could look around.  I can tell you that by the numbers all my posts were there.  Images were there also.  Much time and I'm sure some $$$ have been spent by Festool so that an outside firm could convert all these years of work over.

Will there be some bugs?  Probably, but we can get thru those.  Will it take a little time to find things - yes.  Should be kinda fun - and that coming from a guy who sat in Festool's headquarters and pleaded in the past to not convert to something.

Stop worrying - at least we will continue to have a place to interact and help support each other.

That probably explains it. (That is if Peter was logged out as well for the screenshot, or because of his Moderator status he sees it also while logged in.)

Kind regards,
Oliver

I think it’s great that Festool is willing to keep the FOG running and upgrade to a widely used & current software.

I guess only few members here will have noticed, but Bosch Power Tools (Pro/blue & DIY/green) deleted all its corresponding forums effective since mid December ‘24. And that came after a disastrous ‘software upgrade’ to a proprietary ‘forum software’ that was set out to give a more ‘social media like feeling’ to the users.  … No one involved in that project understood that the biggest value of a forum is the accessibility, indexing and ‘link ability’ of content. They managed to get rid of these basic functions in favor of a ‘social media like flow’. You could no longer link or jump to specific posts, no pages, and if someone answered to a specific post, that post would then appear directly beneath the post that it would answer - resulting in ‘new posts’ that could be anywhere within a thread and no way to jump directly to them. You would have had to scroll through the whole thread, reload after reload, and keep an eye out for new posts. Needless to say, ultimately that killed those forums and so they were shut down and deleted last year.

So yeah, very happy Festool values the FOG and XenForo is a great choice.

Kind regards,
Oliver

I will be bumping this thread numerous times between now and when the changeover occurs just to make sure it is seen as often as possible.

I did let Festool know about the emails and the information at the top of the page. I’m not going to look for that cause because as a moderator I haven’t messed with that stuff before and I ain’t going to start now with the countdown started.

I see the header when logged in.  Maybe is some sort of bowser configuration or it is now fixed.

Bob

Festool got the header working for general members.

Post away, tomorrow night you take off  [smile].

Now fixed...is the correct statement.  [smile]

Here's a before and after screen shot on my phone. All I did was refresh the browser and the header appeared.

For those who did not see the email, here is a screenshot (cropped) of what I received.  Make sure you have your correct email in your profile and also write down your login information including your password.

Thank you.

Those have always popped up on my screen.  There are currently settings for each category - Guest, Member, Moderator, Admin.  There were issues with who saw what and these must have just popped in as visible for regular members.

Well, it's almost at the advertised time.  I wonder who will post the first message - other than Festool - on the new version of the FOG!

Any guesses?

Maybe this will be the last post on the old version. :)

Nope.  Try again.  I just got confirmation it's a go.

I'll let someone else have the final and first word.
