A CT22 with a Hole?

As I was returning from my trip to New England, I swung by a Marketplace seller who wanted to unload a CT-ASA Boom Arm 492753 for $45. He bought it years ago but never installed it and had the parts sitting in the opened box. As we chatted, he said that he thought the arm needed the CT handle to mount it and that I could take the handle from the CT22. Then he said if I wanted, I could take the entire CT22 as well. But, while the motor still worked, there was some kind of hole somewhere in the vac that rendered it unusable.

The CT22 is sitting in the garage but I haven't looked at it yet. As I was sitting here thinking about it, I wanted to ask if this sounds right. Is there a section of the CT22 that requires a full seal to create the vacuum? Or is the vacuum created solely by the motor and blower? I'll get into it tomorrow but just was interested in a primer. Thanks!

Don't know the specific answer to your question as my CT 22, purchased new in 2007 just keeps chugging along. The CT 22 is a great vac and is definitely worth saving if you need to put forth the effort. I certainly don't baby my tools as I'm not a collector per se and I feel they're made for a specific purpose, but I also don't drag them around behind a truck at the end of a rope like some folks enjoy doing.

I agree with Cheese that the CT-22 is worthy and personally, I'd find and repair the "hole". I cannot answer the specific question about whether or not it would affect performance. Like Cheese, my first CT was the CT-22 back in the mid-2000s and earlier this year it moved from "primary extractor" status to being dedicated to the Kapex I bought myself. A new CT-Midi took over "primary extractor" status for all the handhelds at the bench

Another fan of the CT-22. Mine just keeps working (knock on wood). I'm going to wager there's a blockage at the inlet. That would eliminate suction and make the motor sound like it was working too hard, which someone might mistake as a "hole".

I don't know why the actual CT is only 10% of the picture, but ok. At least that gave us the chance to spot the box of CT 33 bags. Beware; those are a size too big. They will fit, but will sit with creases in the tank.

Looks like the front corner is cracked all the way to the hinge. There might be more damage internally. The 22 is a weird design. When the top is flipped up to change the bag, it's prone to tip sideways, especially when outdoor on uneven surfaces + wind. It's also easy to bump into with the same result. That probably happened here, hence the crack to the hinge.

You absolutely need a seal between inlet and bag and then from the filter to the housing to prevent dust bypassing bag and/or filter. Any leak elsewhere will just decrease the max. vacuum and airflow through the normal inlet. This will make it pretty useless very quickly. Well, and if you suck liquids without the special container it might leak too.

My guess would be it will become pretty obvious pretty fast where it's leaking.

My CTL 22 is from 2006. It runs fine too beyond some bearing noise when powering down. It's way more noisy than the CTL 26, but since it's permanently paired with a table saw, that doesn't really matter.

Just be aware that the Festool-branded fleece bags for the CTL-22 are no longer sold. The paper bags are still sold, just like in the earlier days of the CTL-22, when there were no fleece bags either. There are 3rd party copies of the fleece bag.

At current rate of use I have for years of the Festool fleece bags stocked, so I didn't try out any of them yet. When there is one box left I might start with that.
