A deceivingly simple project

A young artistic neighbor of mine wanted me to make a figurine out of a video game character (the minecraft fox). That was easy...until I had to cut some angles and glue everything together.

These tools came to my rescue: Kapex and gyrojaw (except the snout, all the pieces are joined with the aid of dominoes).

I did the making and she'll do the painting. When she's done coloring it, I'll add a photo of the finished piece here so you can see the transformation.

That's the thing about simple. Making something look simple might take a bit more thinking than it appears at first glance.

Cool looking project though and well built. Maybe the smallest project containing Dominos ever?

I think so in terms of the size of the piece, measuring about 3/-1/2" x 4" x 8". Dominoes used were 4mm, 5mm and 6mm, the use of  which proved tremendously helpful in ensuring that the body (to the head) and tail (to the body) didn't shift under clamping pressure.

Without any woodworking knowledge, my teenage neighbor asked if I was gonna glue the pieces together. I showed her some of the assembly photos, and hoped they were self-explanatory.

It's funny that this came up now. I was just talking to one of the young guys at work yesterday, and he was saying that "retro" was making a come-back. I guess there is quite a segment of them that get into games that "appear" to be 8-bit. Some of them are even web-based, by what he was saying. They are not truly 8-bit, but they have the old blocky look.

"Retro?"

From what I heard from the girl's dad (himself a Gen Xer), younger folks are finding instant cameras (Polaroid cameras updated) a hot gift these days. Her teen daughter even finds some of the music in his era appealing!

Unlike the days we played video games, Gen Zers are into gaming for the social connections it provides, and they make online friends better than the days we had pen pals for company.

Yeah [member=57948]ChuckS[/member] this guy is a little older than that, but not a whole generation, at 23.
He's the youngest in the family, but even at that his parents are still 10 years younger than me.
The music aspect is a little hit/miss though. Some of what he knows is surprising, but then might be completely clueless about something very close to it? I assume "parents favorites" but not the depth you would have from actually living through that time.
For my generation (last of the boomers) the social part of video games was playing in an arcade. The interaction was immediate, but obviously only local. The only video console I ever had was the Nintendo that came right before the 64, not counting the Pong/Break-out we had as kids.
Tetris was the thing, I've never played any of these modern games. It's just not my thing, but I am amused by these kids getting into retro.

If anyone was into Tetris and has an Apple TV+ account, I highly recommend the movie of the same name.  It was executive-produced by the people who were part of the real-life story, though I'm sure a lot of it was dramatized and fictionalized for effect.  Much better than what I thought it would be.
