As someone who makes his living using Festools I have rarely posted images of projects that I do because my work is boring and non exciting.  In the last couple of months - thru luck and the comments of one customer - things have been going a different route from my norm.

My current project - a fireplace mantle to replace this:

Today the CMS should have some fun.

Stay tuned...

Looking forward to it, but they should probably replace the brick first.

I'll be interested in seeing how difficult it will be to remove that brick!

The brick half is........ ODD to say the least.

Who ever thought having brick on the flooring like that need............ [dead horse]

[popcorn]  interested to see how it will look once finished!

Hopefully it's better attached than one I removed earlier this year that was about 9' high and 'held' to the wall above the firebox with a total of two nails mortared between the brick. It was loose and good tug at the top while on the ladder and the whole thing would come down on top of me. A case of more is better, especially in earthquake country.

It's unfortunately common around here as well in homes from the 70's and it was probably just the builders quick and cheap way to comply with the codes.

The brick is staying.  The owners will be painting it.  The fireplace doors will be removed and possibly be replaced.  The fireplace is not used.  The hearth is supported by a concrete slab.  The floor covering is a light colored carpet.

Almost done.  Customers have to make a few decisions about the panel over the tv tonight.  This has been fun and has already lead to more work.

Huge improvement Peter, well done! I hope you can get a final photo after the finish work is complete.

Thanks.

I almost offered to paint it, but I made the dentil molding on the MFT/3 with the OF1400 and I don't want to mess with the edges.  Or the routed edge on the mantel shelf.  The only non Festools used were for the removal of the brick corbels.  Used the parallel guides and the TS55 to rip the rails and stiles.

Peter,  Nice job man!  Doesn't surprise me you got more work from the home owner.

Thanks for sharing the project!  Please share a finished photo if at all possible.

Peter, nice job!

As an aside, TV's over fireplaces always make me scratch my head.  [bite tongue]

Thanks for the comments, this one has been fun and the customers are fabulous.

Harry, when I heard that they wanted to put the tv over the fireplace I tried to talk them out of it.  They heard me, but they had problems with glare everywhere else due to the doors.  The design was prompted by that.  We were able to drop the tv by about nine inches (and that is why the tv isn't centered in the opening).  They don't use the fireplace (gas logs disconnected) so I wasn't as concerned about the heat.  Also when you come in the front door you are looking directly down the hallway and seeing this.  They wanted something more in tune with the rest of their home.

There is a little surprise in store for them.   [big grin]  I'll try and get a picture later.

Considering that the TV won't be centred would bother me if it was an installation in my home. At the very least, I'd have modified the larger space above the TV to make it some kind of design feature - *something* to make the proportions look a little more natural.

But, all of that being said, it's the customer's choice so who am I to question their preferences?

Very nice!  [smile]

It would have been nice to make a sliding door that goes up to cover the TV when not in use. That's if the space above and in front of the TV will allow it. But why not just put a shelf above.
This post got me thinking of my own mantle piece that needs a makeover.
