A makeover needed?

Those hide-a-ways can be fun.  I never did one out on the face of a wall or fireplace, but did several behind the chimney within a closet or, in one case, a laundry room.  One was in stone.  We left an opening in the back side of the chimney to insert a "deadman" beam to lift the lentil stone (top stone where the angle across the fireplace opening would have been)  the stone had to be dragged onto the floor by means of a Jeep (A front door and back door were in alignment so heavy rope and rollers were used) and then placed on rollers and rolled to just in front of the fireplace.  Then using block & tackle from stone to "deadman" beam, we lifted and slid the stone into place.  Once the beam was removed, i cut a small stone to fill the opening in the backside of the masonry.  You could see the joint, but it was hidden in a closet, so one had to know where to look.  I never did one out in a spot where it had to be hidden by crafty joinery such as this one.

My customer sent me an image after the painter visited.  He is coming to do the second coats.

At first I wasn't fond of the painted brick, but it really comes together and looks great all painted.

Vin, thanks.  I hate painted brick when people apply it to the point of it looking thick and like inside a concrete block bathroom.  This only had one coat of the thinest applied so that some of the character would bleed thru.  I would have liked to do something more artistic, but the hearth was the issue.

I thought the same!   Not saying I like the painted brick work  but it does blend in.

What I would of tried to do and convince the client to let me do would be black granite or slate stuck to the brick work.  Like a frame work just lipping past so you still have the block work on the inside just no brick work on the face and then the same on the hearth stick a large slab which over hung the brick work by 50mm or so  so you can stick strips of slate/granite on the edge so leaving only a 20mm over hang or something like that.   So you wouldnt see any of the brick work
Ya know wa I mean like!
