A review of the iPad geared towards contractors

Saying I don't need "bloatware" like flash is like saying I don't need phillips bits any more. I need them. There is a huuuuge portion of internet content that continues to use flash and will do so for a long time to come. As far as the windows OS, that whole thing is a security risk. I've yet to encounter a virus on my Mac AND IT RUNS FLASH, albeit poorly.

While I love my iPad, Flash is a big issue for me. I find the iPad an ideal shop display computer as it is dust proof for the most part. I would love to be able to view some Flash videos while setting up some tools. Akeda for one has lots of videos that I would like to be able to view in the shop and the iPad would be ideal for this - but no Flash!

When I said "bloatware" I was referring to the programming that makes up Adobe software.  It wastes a lot of memory that could be trimmed substantially by their programmers.

Why can I not find this cloud browser?  I can find it on google but not in the app store?

Jmb

It is still available.  Go to the app store and search for cloud browse.  I found it by going thru itunes or thru my iPad.  99 cents.  Even was updated on Dec 17.

I found this on their web site:
Why is Cloud Browse available only in the U.S. and Canadian App Store?

We have not release the application for other countries outside of US because there are technical and performance issues that the company is working on. We plan to release Cloud Browse in Europe and Asia in the future. Using the app outside of US right now will have a degraded performance, as our data centers are located only in the U.S.

Also you are not missing much, some suggest to remore connect to your desktop and run firefox remotely, this software does the same.

Sorry about that.  I should have guessed something was weird about that software.  I looked at it yesterday to go to the festoolusa website and noticed that it made the assumption that I was in Canada.  I normally can't get to the ekat part of the site on the iPad, but using cloudbrowse I could.  The parts catalog pricing was in Canadian dollars, and the options for languages were English and French.

a likely culprit may be encryption software built into the browser,... some countries are funny about that stuff..... like this one

Using this application you are not browsing the web from wherever you are.
You are in fact browsing from the location of the "cloud browse" servers.
And it seems that they are in Canada. So any content that can't be viewed there won't be available through "cloud browse"

This is how it seems as if you are watching Flash on an iPad. You are not watching Flash. The "cloud browse" servers are transcoding (probably to h264) and streaming that to your iPad.

Though for most cases this is good enough.

Well, after using my iPad for over a year I am still enjoying it.  But, we live in a nano second world and new things come out, so...

The Square - The Square is a device that will connect to either an iPhone or iPad that will allow you to swipe credit cards for payment.  It connects thru the headphone jack, and it is about 1" x 1" x 1/2" in size.

The cost:  $99 thru the Apple Store.  FREE thru the Square website.

I had thought about accepting credit cards for customer payments for some time, but the monthly fees in addition to the credit card processing fees would be a killer for a low volume customer like me.  When I visited their site, I was shocked when I saw how, in my opinion, reasonable this was.

Some key points:

Get it for free
Set up account online
No monthly fees - Get one and stick it in your glovebox.  Use it when you need to - once a year or daily -
Accepts MC, Visa, Amex, Discover all at the same rate
Funds are transferred into your account the next day

This might be something to consider.  BUT make sure you read the use agreement in detail.

Their website is The Square

Keep Smiling!

Peter

"Funds are transferred into your account the next day"

Maybe the next business day?  I think that's how it's done.  [big grin]

Yes, the next business day.  But check the the use agreement for additional details.

Peter

That square using swipe man that ain't very secure at all.  Where is the chip and pin?  I can just take ur card swipe it and enter what ever amount it want in and press accept my self with out your authorisation.  It's kinda like my wireless card but that's limited to 10pounds any more and I have to enter a pin

JMB,

If you also get CIRCLE, that will surround the SQUARE and protect you.  Of course you could always do like I do now and just accept gold for payment.  I only ask that if you're giving me teeth or fillings, you brush first.

Peter, A very nice review -- it looks like the IPad is a very useful tool for contractors, saving lots of time.

I use my Ipad on the job alot!  I have a few apps which work out centres for me studding a joists and spindles straight and angle.  I use mine for roofing just measure the span and it tells me my jack rafters and hips and common rafters.    Also working out stairs just type in height done!

I use it to show clients what I have found on the net or things I have done in the past to give them an idea.  Love it always have it on me!
