Maybe this is the wrong place to be asking? But I'm looking for ideas for abstract designs for family room furniture such as couch and love seat. I figure I will need to be trying my hand at some upholstering in the process. It does not have to be conventional or classic in style. In fact to give you some idea where I'm heading... if you ever saw the movie "Indecent Proposal" they had a crazy looking chair that could have been recycled cardboard or cork for all I could tell. I really like working with plywood and I have seen some cool uses for ply over the years. I'm looking for unconventional like possibly something you might find in a stateroom of a Starfleet vessel ;-) The again I don't want my place to look like a cartoon. Toss me any ideas or links on the interwebs if you have any.

One site with some ideas...

Fine Woodworking publishes a "Design Book" every other  year.  Those from the eighties and onward have some pretty wild stuff.  Another good source is the Furniture Society's annual Furniture Studio publications.  Google 'design book' and then 'furniture studio' and you will find lots of inexpensive used copies.

Lark Books has a number of books in the "500 Series" including 500 Tables, 500 Cabinets, 500 Chairs as well as 500 Wood Bowls and 400 Wood Boxes.  Lots of ideas, though not all are abstract.

Design Buzz is one blog on designs that I follow.  It's much more than furniture, but interesting all the same.

Also check out Artful Home or just do an image search for "art furniture".

Although not into upholstered furniture, you might try David Marks' website.  He works a lot with exotic hardwoods and unique designs and finishing techniques.

I have taken a class of his and purchased his videos.  I must say that I think he is one of the greatest.  I think we all recall his DIY series, Woodworks, with great admiration.
