Achieving this look?

Any of you finishing gurus know how to get this look (grayish but with grain)?  Wife would like this kind of finish for bathroom cabinetry.  I imagine some kind of chemical treatment is required, or can it be achieved with dilute milk paint?

Just a basic process would be appreciated as a starting point for experimentation.  Thanks!

Oak or ash with a pickling stain over a light grey stain. I prefer Ash to achieve the gray undertone vs. a pink undertone that Oak will give you.

I would also try a light coat of gray milk paint. You could practice on a sample piece to get your desired look. I have had good luck with general finish brand.

Might I suggest you look at the General Finishes website?https://generalfinishes.com/videos They've got a bunch of how-to videos on their paints and are very good at responding to questions like yours. Looks like milk paint and glaze to create a somewhat distressed finish.

I agree with what Tim mentioned with a pickling stain you can also use the stain as a toner to achieve the correct hue you are looking for. As he also noted stay away from red oak will give you a pink hue we have had really good luck using QS whit oak, ash sounds interesting may have to give that a try.
