Adding a Moxon Vise to the MFT/3

Typical Moxon vise just sits on the bench and is clamped to it.  Having a clamping board behind it so you can clamp down onto the MFT is about all you'd need.  Or is there something specific I'm missing?

I made mine with a small table section on it.  I've used it on all my benches including the MFT; my main bench has 20mm holes drilled à-la-MFT

I also built a Moxon patterned somewhat after what Paul-Marcel has done with the shelf.  I've used it on an MFT, but prefer it on a more solid bench when I'm cutting dovetails or other more  strenuous work.  It works fine when I need a higher 'close up' vise for some detail work on the MFT.  I use the clamps through the holes to secure it.

I tried looking for vice and under MFT on your site but could not find the video where you made one. Could you direct me to it? Thanks.

Neil took care of it for me :)  woohoo! Thanks, Neil!

I generally don't post videos of my vices anyway; if I did, it would just be me having too many Mojitos with a certain Polish girl and getting absolutely nowhere.  Then there'd be the sipping of Malbec from Mendoza, AR while chatting with Chris Wong; you need wine to chat with Chris Wong...  My other vices are stored, temporarily, in my incognito browser cache and really wouldn't make much of a video.

But there is a vise video or two on my site for ya on the Moxon vise.  :)  Yeah, I used to spell it wrong, too, before someone caught me on it :)

Now don't tell me you are making a vise to help hold together your neighbor's Shed of Doom...  what is the latest on that anyway?!

Its still there  :-)

I made a Moxon vice using the Benchcrafted hardware for use with my traditional workbench. Without having tried it, my sense is that it would not work as well with an MFT because it is a very heavy vice and it would unbalance the MFT. You would have to counterweight it somehow- perhaps by adding a shelf at the back and clamping that to the MFT. Also the front of the rear jaw is supposed to lie flush with the workbench apron so you would have to line up the jaw with the edge of the extrusion.

Furthermore, what advantage would a Moxon vice provide that isn't satisfied by using the F-clamps in the extrusions?

Of course, that's only because my ideas (such as this table) are so far out there that it takes a glass or two to believe that I'd tackle such a thing, and due to the complexity, that wine will temper the frustration and anxiety it inevitably causes... Kapex! Everybody drink!

Chief,

There is also the Moxon twin-screw vise that doesn't sit on top of the bench, but is rather installed so the jaw is flush with the work surface.  Is this what you mean?  Here's mine.

Chris Wong:  Did enjoy a trip through your site.  I really liked the drawer with the micrometer.

My current project of mounting the Twin Screw to the MFT/3 is as follows/
1.  With F clamps fix the back board of the the Twin Screw to the table.  With a level ensure that the top of the back board is level with the top of the MFT/3.
2.  Mark the top and bottom of the area of the table that the F clamp slides into on the outside edge of the back board (do both sides)
3.  Connect these lines .  About one inch in from each end measure and mark the thickness and width of the F clamp on to the backer board.
4.  Drill/rout or hand chisel out a mortise that will allow an F clamp to pass through (you will have to grind off the small dimple of the F clamp to allow
the screw handle to be removed)  Do both sides.
5.  Insert the F Clamp at each end and place the screw handle back on, tighten down.
6.  If you desire a cutting board to lay on your table but be level with the top of the vice, raise the backer board to that height, make a new mortise for that function.
7.  When not in use, the whole vice can be slide off and stored, mounting handles and all.  You sacrifice one pair of small F clamps. ($40.00)

Chief.

In the wet and damp weather of BC, a bowl of punch and a roaring fire will make an Irishman answer what do you do with a drunken sailor.................................

I'm building out my garage and started chewing on the counter top and a tail vise.  That took me to Benchcrafted and the Moxon (not a tail vise).  I thought hey, this might work on the MFT.  Then I thought I can't be the first and here I am.

I ordered the screws.  My design will be to add "back feet" at 90 deg to the back of the vise.  Then add a perpendicular flange at the bottom of the back feet.  I'll  drill  four holes in the flange to match the MFT hole pattern.  Next place four stubby Quaz dogs in the MFT under the flange holes.  Lastly, I cut a 1/4" aluminum plate to match the outline of the holes, drill it and tap it.

Now the vise can be secured with bolt-knobs from the top, through the flange, dogs, MFT top and screwed into the plate.  I may use the useless knobs from the Festool clamping elements to secure the vise from above.

I'll post pictures Pass or Fail.

Let me know if I'm missing the mark on this.

All-the-best,

Luke

This video is is a rally nice version...  Narrative is German however.

I'm thinking something like this, where the vise does not hang over the MFT/3.  Although it could....

That really is a very nice version.  I could build it and add the Quas dog and al-lou-mini-yum  mounting plate.

Thanks

I really like your tall Moxon bench. I have been thinking about making one for quite some time. I got a Beall 1" threading kit, and I have been having trouble getting the threads right. The nut does not turn anywhere near as smoothly as the one in your video. Can you give any advice on what specific diameter I should turn the dowel before threading it, and advice on how to tweak the Beall threading device/router combination. Any help would be appreciated.
