And you thought your planes were ultra sharp and precise?

[size=13pt] Japanese woodshaving competitions.
8 microns measured in shavings within first example.

Excellent, I like the samurai background music as well. [thumbs up] [big grin]

Intense artisans, I think I hear that something wrong with the ventilation system in the hall fans seem to be banging against the housing of the unit [blink]

Thanks for sharing!

That large smoothing plane is insane.  I would like to see the sharpening setup for that!

In all fairness to the rest of us,  Japan does have some of the very nicest woods in the world to plane (cedars).  After a weekend of planing #2 cherry, which is not as nice to plane as FAS cherry, I planed some soft, straight grain pine and suddenly my plane was amazingly sharp, without any action on my part.

As for the nice 8" shavings, wow!  I've gotten shavings that thin before, but usually not the full length of the plane blade.  Getting that kind of consistency across the whole length of the plane is amazing.

Hmm..between the thickness of the shavings and the slowlyness of the plane draw i wonder how they get anything done??
