here is a video tour of my latest built in project I finished.  I will be going back and redoing the mantel as it needs my ideas and skill as it is to plane and if you have some ideas to add that would look great on the mantel redo and above let me know.

enjoy

Thanks again for posting. I always enjoy a video update from you.
Re: the Mantle redo. I would, if you can by code even out the space around the fireplace surround. The space between the top of the fireplace box and where the mantle starts is wider than the rest of the surround. It looks strange.
Have you checked out the Building Fireplace Mantels,” by Mario Rodriguez. I don't have it but Jesse Wright and Brian Cinski Jr. both referred to it as a good reference in their recent articles in their ThisIsCarpentry stories.
Traditional American Rooms book is also very good reference.

A couple questions re the mantle redesign/redo:
- What style does the client like. I noticed that you have put a different valance on the top of the cabinet. It is a bit "Victorian" looking with those scallops. Is that something the client liked?

- Do you want to make the fireplace mantle a focal point? Maybe a darker (Oak?) Mantle on the lighter wall contrasting with your bookcases makes more sense. The current mantle recedes visually into the wall because my eye is drawn to the darker tops on your bookcase and then up to the top of the bookcase.
