Last night someone decided to steal some tools and things. I live in a quiet and safe part of rural Napa County err correct that, used to.
I forgot to lock my truck. From inside my Kapex and so- so car stereo. From the tool box they got a Hilti TE7C,saw all ,three nail guns and a skilsaw.
The gall was that they took a shovel from the orchard and one out of 16 chickens from the chicken coop.  ???

I pretty lucky thou ( at this time) they left cash, credit cards, and five systainers with tools on the inside. In the bed of the truck they left cordless hilti, misc. hand tools C15 and t18. They did leave my trailer alone.

So please Bay Area members please keep a look out for a Kapex or two- I know of a person that got his stolen two weeks ago. He told me his whole trailer was cleaned out.
Thanks,
Rick

Don't know what to say Rick that won't be ruined by the word filter.  I assume you have the serial numbers just in case someone sees the stuff on Craigslist?

Sorry.

Peter

Darn, sorry to hear that.

Moderators: Can we make a sticky post that advice folks to check for stolen tools/serial numbers ? We are a great group and provide great advice. If we can make it great practice to ask for serial number if we purchase used we could help close the loop there as well.

Just an idea.

Thanks Peter, I have some off the numbers. I was really good about logging them both on the computer and on paper. I been bad about logging lately. The computer crashed. I'm looking for the book. If any ill call Festool on Monday for the Kapex.
Just found out the neighbor down the street got hit also. Both vehicles. Just some electronic stuff but left a county own computer in his wife's car.

But a chicken, really!
Rick

Infuriating! Rick, I regularly watch CL for Festools in the Sac area, if anything shows up I'll ping you.

Thanks Paul, I appreciate that. My saw was made in 07 and is missing the two adjustable back fences.
Just found two more people got hit also.

You might want to try to remember if you have gotten into the habit of leaving your truck unlocked when you come home during the day from shopping or from a job with intentions of going back out again. This sounds like just the kind of thievery I was describing in the other thread. Case the neighborhood during the day. Come back and hit the likely candidates that night. While casing the neighborhood, they will check as much as they can check for those that leave their vehicles unlocked figuring there is a good chance it will be unlocked at night as well. Here they are bold enough to try to come down my driveway as far as they dare to case the place if they think they can get away with it. It has gotten so that I won't even hide that I know what is up and they freeze in their tracks. They know no amount of excuses given will sway me. I know what they were doing and they know I know. So they just high tail it out of there ASAP.

Also, they take what they can rifle quickly and very very quietly. They won't by and large cut chains, spend any time picking locks or even breaking them and they will try not to take anything that will look immediately incriminating if they are stopped by a cruiser for some reason. Heck they usually won't even close the car door of a car they have just rifled for fear that the sound of the door closing will be heard.

Sounds to me that you are a victem of a travelling group of gypsies . They hit a area hard then move on. Chances are the items that got stolen are already fenced .

I hates these people. There was a group from London hitting homes in my area. They were hitting 7 homes a week for about a month or so then gone suddenly.

I hope they catch those thieves. I hate thieves they are lower then whale.... I M O

But chances are they have moved on to the next set off victims.

Sorry bud . I sweat it when I leave my home for a few days on vacation now. I got my tools lock up in my garage/ shop. But since I'm in a rental I can't really secure it the way I want.

I hope your insured and you can at least recover some of your loses.

My car got hit in a parking lot, just got the estimate it's going to cost my insurance roughly £ 3500 which is about $5K no note, no I'm sorry, nothing, sure insurance is paying but I have to pay roughly £300 or $500 deductible..

There's some real dirt bags running around...

some absolute scum bags about. my van got broke into a while back, a young child must have been that climbed through into a partitioned off area through the head lining to pass tools out.

Picked this thread to post this in as the "stolen Festool" thread has plenty of stuff in it and this one was just a little farther down the list.

So this morning since my daughter was visiting friends that live in a garden condo complex just about a mile away and needed something from daddy I drove into that complex parking lot with these two threads still tumbling around in my head.

I know I discussed that here they come into your neighborhood, case it quickly and are back that night to do the deed. But when I went into that parking lot with these threads on my mind I instantly focused attention on the one panel van in that particular segment of parking serving that particular garden complex building. I did not even intend doing that...just the combination of the threads and the immediacy of the moment. It was the only panel van, had ladders on the roof, all typical signs of a guy that gets up on Monday morning and heads for a job site. It dawned on me at that moment how much vulnerability there is for these guys. Its a parking lot, not a driveway.....dozens of vehicles parked around and plenty of excuses for other vehicles to be driving around in the lot.

Here's an update on the story. A water dept maint. person was servicing a meter 1000' from my home and found a stash of tools buried 20' off the road. They were covered with leafs and brush. [attachimg=1]
Lot of red and orange to cover.
The Kapex looks like they dropped it  and only the bevel and cord area took the hit.
Replace parts ordered

Not sure why they left the stuff and didn't return to pick them up.
The neighborhood is happy to have their stuff back.

Sounds/looks like somebody does not have a set of wheels and had to wait for buddy better equipped.  I bet the perpetrator(s) lives in the neighborhood.  Definitely not a seasoned pro.

Yes Wayne, I agree. Not sure what they were planning, but leaving it there for over two weeks?
All the small electronics items, the shovel and my chicken are still missing.
Maybe they forgot where they stashed it or they got detained in other ways( in jail)
Rick

You may have a chupacarbra problem,  I know first hand we on the Gulf Coast have a problem with things growing feet and walking off. Sorry for your troubles. I now spend twice a day moving tools to a so called safe location,  not like the old days when you could leave your keys in the car and no one would mess with it, miss those days.

Could be someone drove by while they were making their getaway they stashed them hoping to come back later when it cooled down meaning you and others wouldn't be expecting them.

It's great that you got your stuff back minus the chicken shovel and a few electronic items.

Do you have a alarm on your truck? If not maybe it's time to invest in one.

I hate to even suggest this but some of those home security cameras that plug into the internets sure look handy. I guess solving a crime after it happens isn't nearly as good as deterring though.

So all the gear was in the elements for a while? Any Rain ?

Yea they could have gotten spooked into thinking they were going to be stopped for something and dropped the tools into the woods intending to come back later. People can feel real out of place when they know they are up to no good and in the wrong part of town. Getting stopped for something else while there is bunch of stolen stuff in the vehicle must be a common way for these characters to get caught.

Also always a surprise to me what they don't take because they are really in a heated rush.

I would imagine that they were BBQ'ing the chicken and drinking somebody's stolen wine and forgot were they stashed the goods.  Glad you got your stuff back [big grin]

Yes we had a little rain. Some of the boxes collected a little water. The truck stereo is fine. Kapex no rust.
The hilti bits got a little rust.
Dried every thing out wiped off the poison oak and put them back in service.
I got real lucky.
