Another warning for dealers - credit card scam

Some years ago, I mentioned this in the Dealer's section here and unfortunately it's time to mention this again. To all dealers using UPS, there is a fraud situation that I will bring to your attention, since this has happened 2 times with the same tool - the Domino 500 set, in the same week. I was notified by the customers inquiring "I just received this package with your (my name) on it that I did not order and my card was charged fraudulently." I'm luck for their honesty!

Here's the fraud. Thief steals a customer's credit card and places the order on the web, using the victim's correct address for billing and shipping, BUT uses an email address and phone number that goes directly back to the "thief." So, they wait until shipping is confirmed via email and using the "My Ups" option, ask UPS to reroute the tool to their own address.

Just a heads up and something to be aware of. Remedy as you see fit.

Sounds like something UPS could fix pretty easily.

IF a redirect request is received THEN UPS could ask for approval from shipper.

IF shipper says NO -OR- shipper has a standing order to NOT redirect shipments
THEN no redirect allowed and maybe some of this could be avoided.

Had this happen to me last year while I was on vacation. Got a text from DHL that my package was to be delivered from Italy in a week. Did some research on it and found someone had purchased some insanely expensive clothing from Italy with my credit card.

Like you have described, the thief changed the mailing address mid-shipment. The bank wanted to cancel my credit card right then, but had to explain it was my only card and I was hundreds of miles away from home.

My bank was able to set it up where I would get a text any time my card is used no matter how much is charged. It is real nice knowing when something gets charged.

I tried contacting the clothier to warn them they were getting scammed too, but they didn’t seem to care. Had to file a fraud claim when I got back.

If you contact UPS they can turn off the "My Choice" option so no one but the shipper can change the delivery address. Had that happen once before too Bob, and it hasn't caused any issues with real customers regarding delivery. Frustrating part of online sales!!

I hope this does not become a common thing.  I regularly use the UPS "my choice" to change deliveries, of course I only use to change delivery from my home to the UPS office near my work, but I would hate this scam to make them turn that off or worse make a shipper request its turned off.

I think they wouldn't be able to use the scam on people who already use MyChoice (i.e., have registered/associated a particular address with a MyChoice account), or else they would need to know your username/password.
